3 Titular Councillor Semyon Alexeich Nyanin, who once served in one of the provincial commercial courts, and
his son Grisha, a retired lieutenant – a colorless personage living off his mother and father’s bread – sit in one of their little rooms, dining. Grisha, as usual, drinks glass after glass and talks without pause; his father, pale, forever anxious and astonished, glances timidly into his son’s face and freezes with some indefinite feeling resembling fear.
4 "
Bulgaria and
Rumelia are mere flowers," says Grisha, savagely picking at his teeth with a fork. "That’s nothing, trifles, nonsense! But you just read what’s happening in Greece and
Serbia, and what talk is going on in
England! Greece and Serbia will rise up,
Turkey too... England will stand up for Turkey."
5 "And
France won’t hold back either..." Nyanin remarks, as though hesitantly.
6 "Lord, they’ve started on politics again!" coughs the lodger
Fyodor Fyodorych from the next room. "Have a little pity on a sick man!"
7 "Yes, and France won’t hold back," Grisha agrees with his father, as if not noticing Fyodor Fyodorych’s cough. "She, brother, hasn’t forgotten those five billion yet! She, brother... those Frenchmen have something up their sleeve! All they’re waiting for is the chance to play some dirty trick on
Bismarck, to slip hellebore into his snuffbox! And if the Frenchman rises up,
the German won’t wait either – kommen Sie her, come here (Ger. kommen Sie her)
Ivan Andreich, sprechen Sie deutsch?.. do you speak German? (Ger. sprechen Sie deutsch?) Ho-ho-ho! After the Germans come
Austria, then Hungary, and then, watch,
Spain over the Caroline Islands...
China with Tonkin, the Afghans... and on it goes, and on, and on! Such things will happen, brother, as you’ve never dreamed of!
Mark my word! You’ll only throw up your hands..."
8 Old man Nyanin, timid, cowardly, and downtrodden by nature, stops eating and turns paler still. Grisha stops eating too. Father and son – both cowards, both fainthearted and superstitious; some indefinite, objectless dread fills both their souls, drifting formlessly through space and time: something is going to happen!! But exactly what, where, and when, neither father nor son knows. The old man generally surrenders to his fear in silence; Grisha, though, cannot help stirring himself and his father up with long outpourings of words; he will not rest until he has thoroughly frightened himself.
9 "Just you wait and see!" he goes on. "Before you can gasp, everything in
Europe will be turned upside down. There’ll be
the devil to pay! You, say, don’t care one way or the other, grass could stop growing for all you mind, but as for me – off to war I go, if you please! Not that I care, mind you... it’ll be a pleasure."
10 Having frightened himself and his father with politics, Grisha begins holding forth about cholera.
11 "There, brother, they won’t stop to ask whether you’re alive or dead – straight onto the cart with you, and off out of town! Lie there with the corpses! No time to sort out whether you’re sick or already dead!"
12 "Lord!" coughs Fyodor Fyodorych behind the partition. "As if it weren’t enough that you’ve filled the place with tobacco smoke and cheap-vodka stink, now you want to finish me off with your talk too!"
13 "And just what, may I ask, is wrong with our conversation?" Grisha asks, raising his voice.
14 "I don’t care for ignorance... It turns my stomach."
15 "If it turns your stomach, don’t listen... So that’s how it’ll be, brother father! You’ll throw up your hands, and it’ll be too late. And on top of it all there’s thieving in the banks, in the zemstvos... There, you hear, a million was stolen, there a hundred thousand, in a third place a thousand... every single day! Not a day goes by that some
cashier isn’t running off."
16 "Well, so what of it?"
17 "What do you mean, so what? You’ll wake up one fine morning, look out the window, and there’ll be nothing left, everything stolen. You’ll look, and along the street there’ll be cashiers running, cashiers, cashiers... You go to get dressed, and you’ve got no trousers – stolen! There’s your ’so what’!"
19 "Don’t even think it, don’t dream of it!" he tells his father. "That trial will never end, not to the end of the ages. The verdict, brother, means absolutely nothing. Whatever the verdict is, it’s still
dark waters in the clouds! Say
Semyonova’s guilty... fine, granted, but then where do you put the evidence against Mironovich? Say, suppose, Mironovich is guilty – then where do you put Semyonova and
Bezak? Fog, brother, sheer fog... It’s all so endlessly murky that no one will be satisfied by any verdict, they’ll just go on philosophizing forever... Does the world have an end? It does... And what comes after that end? Another end... And what comes after that second end? And so on... It’s the same with this trial... They’ll go over it another twenty times and arrive at nothing, just raise more fog... Semyonova confesses today, and tomorrow she’ll take it back again – I know nothing, I recall nothing. Then
Karabchevsky will start spinning things round again... He’ll gather himself ten assistants and start spinning, and spinning, and spinning..."
20 "What do you mean, spinning?"
21 "Just like this: send divers down under
Tuchkov Bridge for the weight! Fine, and then straightaway
Ashanin sends a note: the weight wasn’t found! Karabchevsky flies into a rage... What do you mean, not found? That’s because we don’t have any real divers or proper diving equipment! Send for divers from England, and equipment from
New York! While they’re hunting for the weight there, the two sides start dragging the experts back and forth. And the experts spin, and spin, and spin. One won’t agree with another, they read each other lectures... The prosecutor won’t agree with
Erhard, and Karabchevsky won’t agree with
Sorokin... and on it goes, and on! Send for new experts, call in
Charcot from France! Charcot will arrive and immediately: I cannot give an opinion, because the spinal bone wasn’t examined at the autopsy! Dig up Sarah again! Then, brother, there’s the matter of the hair... Whose hair was it? It couldn’t have grown there on the floor by itself, it must have belonged to somebody! Call in hairdressers to give expert testimony! And suddenly it turns out that one hair looks exactly like the hair of Montbazon! Bring Montbazon in here! And on it goes, and on. Everything starts spinning, whirling round. And on top of that
the English divers will find not just one weight in the Neva, but five. If it wasn’t
Semyonova who killed her, then the real murderer surely threw in a dozen weights. They’ll start examining the weights. First thing: where were they bought? From the merchant Podskokov! Bring the merchant here! ’Mr. Podskokov, who bought weights from you?’ – ’I don’t recall.’ – ’In that case, name for us the surnames of your customers!’ Podskokov will start trying to remember, and he’ll recall that you once bought something from him too. There, he’ll say, such-and-such people bought goods from me, and among them, Titular Councillor Semyon Alexeyev Nyanin! Bring in this Titular Councillor Nyanin!"
22 Nyanin hiccups, rises from the table, and, pale and lost, paces nervously about the room.
23 "Now, now..." he mutters. "God knows what you’re saying!"
24 "Yes, bring in Nyanin! You’ll go, and Karabchevsky will look right through you, right through! ’Where,’ he’ll ask, ’were you on the night of such-and-such a date?’ And your tongue will cleave to the roof of your mouth. They’ll compare that hair with yours right there, send for Ivanovsky, and off you go, Mr. Nyanin, to the lockup!"
25 "Wh... what do you mean? Everyone knows it wasn’t me who killed her! What are you saying?"
26 "That makes no difference! Who cares that it wasn’t you who killed her! They’ll start spinning you round and round until you get down on your knees and say: I did it! That’s how it’ll be!"
27 "Now, now, now..."
28 "I’m only speaking as an example, mind you. It’s all the same to me. I’m a free man, unmarried. If I feel like it, I’ll be off to
America tomorrow! Go looking for me then, Karabchevsky! Spin away!"
29 "Lord!" groans Fyodor Fyodorych. "If only their throats would dry up! You devils, will you ever be quiet or not?"
30 Nyanin and Grisha fall silent. Dinner is over, and the two of them lie down on their beds. A worm gnaws at them both.
