Chekhov reports that he called on Sumbatov in person to say he will be out of Moscow the next day, so their planned champagne cannot happen, and asks whether Monday might work instead; he is leaving town Tuesday or Wednesday. He mentions in passing that he saw "Alexandrov" that day and did not attend "the committee" – both left unidentified and unexplained in the letter itself.
Dear Alexander Ivanovich, I stopped by to tell you that tomorrow I won’t be in Moscow, and that we won’t be drinking champagne. Would you find it possible to put it off until Monday? I’m leaving on Tuesday or Wednesday. I saw Alexandrov today; I wasn’t at the committee.
Милый Александр Иванович, был у Вас, чтобы сказать Вам, что завтра меня не будет в Москве и что шампанское пить не будем. Не найдете ли Вы возможным отложить до понедельника? Уезжаю я во вторник или в среду. Видел сегодня Александрова; на комитете не был.
