A brief note to Prince Alexander Ivanovich Urusov (1843-1900), written ten days after the previous letter to him. Chekhov acknowledges Urusov’s letter and answers with a small, image-driven aside about returning from the country by sledge over the thawing March snow and seeing the first rooks of the season – a characteristic touch of observed nature standing in for any fuller reply.

I received your letter, dear Alexander Ivanovich, yesterday, Sunday, at eleven in the evening, on returning from the country. At the hour you were dining at Varvara Alexeyevna’s, I was riding in a wide sledge over the melting snow, watching the rooks, which, I might add, have arrived.
Ваше письмо, уважаемый Александр Иванович, я получил вчера, в воскресенье, в 11 часов вечера, вернувшись из деревни. В тот час, когда Вы обедали у Варвары Алексеевны, я ехал на широких санях по тающему снегу и смотрел на грачей, которые, кстати сказать, прилетели.
