Headnote
Written from Moscow shortly before Chekhov’s departure for Italy with Suvorin (mid-March 1891). He confesses, half-joking, that he still has not read the stories Yelena Mikhailovna Shavrova sent him – he is absorbed in his own "long tale" (the novella that became "The Duel") and promises to read them before he leaves, or else after Lent. A planned introduction to Suvorin fell through when Suvorin took ill; he teases her that her early efforts need exactly the kind of fierce criticism Suvorin is famous for. He needles her over an actor she apparently wants cast in one of her pieces – pressing for the character actor Alexander Lensky over some "waxen, godlike figure" – and asks after two figures from her manuscripts, Filippych and Zilbergrosh, addressing her throughout by the pen name "Mr. Shastunov." He closes by inviting her along to Italy.

I am terribly at fault before you, dear Yelena Mikhailovna, but if you knew what a long tale I am writing, how my head is spinning over it, you would forgive me for having given you no answer at all so far. I have not yet read your stories. Oh, I am a villain! By day I read nothing, because it would upset the order of thought I need for my work, and by evening I am tired and cross, and likewise read nothing except newspaper articles.
Я страшно виноват перед Вами, уважаемая Елена Михайловна, но если бы Вы знали, какую длинную повесть пишу я, как кружится у меня по этому поводу голова, то извинили бы меня за то, что я до сих пор не даю Вам никакого ответа. Я еще не читал Ваших рассказов. О, я злодей! Днем я не читаю ничего, потому что это помешало бы тому моему порядку мыслей, который нужен для работы, а к вечеру бываю утомлен и зол, и тоже не читаю ничего, кроме статей газетного характера.
At the start of next week I am probably leaving for Italy. Before I go I shall read your stories and do whatever needs doing. And if I do not go, you will get an answer no earlier than the end of the second week of Lent.

I wanted to arrange a meeting for you with Suvorin, but he suddenly fell ill and left. He loves literature passionately and scolds beautifully, and you are now passing through that stage of your budding career when you need to be scolded fiercely. If only for that shaved mug.
Я хотел устроить для Вас свидание с Сувориным, но он вдруг заболел и уехал. Он любит литературу страстно и отлично бранится, а Вы теперь переживаете тот стадий Вашей начинающейся деятельности, когда с Вами нужно жестоко браниться. Хотя бы за бритую рожу.
Well, if you need an actor, why not take a real one – Lensky, say – rather than that waxen, godlike figure? I cannot stand two-legged gods, especially when someone makes them up. Give us life, Mr. Shastunov!
Ну, коли Вам понадобится актер, то почему не взять настоящего, например, Ленского, а не эту восковую, богоподобную фигуру? Не терплю двуногих богов, особенно, если их сочиняют. Давайте нам жизнь, г. Шастунов!
Do describe Filippych for us. He outdoes Zilbergrosh. I ran into him at the Theatrical Office and asked after you; he praised you, I let slip that you write, and hastened to get his word of honor that this would stay between us. He did not keep his word, and so, in revenge, I gave orders that he not be received, and he has already been turned away once.
Опишите-ка Филиппыча. Этот покрупнее Зильбергроша. Я встретился с ним в Театральной конторе и спросил о Вас, он похвалил, я проболтался о том, что Вы пишете, и поспешил взять с него честное слово, что это останется между нами. Он не сдержал своего слова, ну а я в отместку за это не велел его принимать, и ему уже раз было отказано.
What "Kashtanka" are you writing about? I have no such story. If you have finished the one about Zilbergrosh, send it along. But, Mr. Shastunov, how do you come to know Zilbergrosh’s life so well? It will be interesting to read, very interesting. Send it. If you send it, I shall read it through at one sitting and give you my answer at once.
О какой "Каштанке" Вы пишете? У меня такого рассказа нет. Если кончили про Зильбергроша, то пришлите. Но, г. Шастунов, откуда Вам известна жизнь Зильбергроша? Интересно будет прочесть, очень интересно. Пришлите. Если пришлете, то всё прочту в один присест и тотчас же дам ответ.
