Reading notes
- To Ye. M. Shavrova, 6 March 1891. Moscow. §9 Italy
Chekhov's planned destination (with Suvorin) mentioned already in \S4; he closes by turning the trip into an invitation, teasing "Mr. Shastunov" to come along.
- To A. I. Sumbatov, 11 March 1891. Moscow. §5 they say the roses are already blooming with us in Italy!
"In our Italy" ("у нас в Италии") is left unresolved by the translator: the phrasing -- "our" Italy, paired with the ironic "they say" -- reads as a private joke or nickname (perhaps for a room, a dacha, or some other place associated with warmth or a Southern climate) rather than a literal claim that Chekhov or anyone in his circle is in Italy while snow falls in Moscow. No other letter in this corpus glosses the reference, so it is flagged here as an in-joke whose specific referent could not be recovered from the available material.
- A Failure of Compensation §37 Italy
The country the letter-writer has been touring alone for a month, waiting for Vera to join him as she once said she would.
