Headnote

A short, high-spirited note to Alexei Sergeyevich Suvorin, written from Moscow five days after the previous letter of 31 January 1891. Chekhov reports on his pet mongoose (acquired in Ceylon on the way back from Sakhalin) resuming its habit of breaking dishes, and on his own relief that the long Sakhalin expedition has not dulled his capacity for work: he is writing "at length, à la Yasinsky," chasing a thousand roubles. He proposes an Italian trip, contrasts his sleepless, dissipated but somehow healthier nights in Petersburg with his state in Moscow, and looks forward to summer and fishing. The letter closes with regards to Suvorin’s wife, Anna Ivanovna, his daughter Alexandra Sergeyevna, and the children.

5 February.
My mongoose has recovered and is already smashing crockery again in top form.
I am writing, writing! I confess I was afraid the Sakhalin trip had put writing out of my system, but now I see it’s nothing of the sort. I’ve written a great deal, writing at length, à la Yasinsky. I want to snatch up a thousand roubles.
Soon I shall start waiting for you. Shall we go to Italy or not? We ought to.
In Petersburg I don’t sleep nights, I drink and knock about, but I feel immeasurably healthier than in Moscow. The devil knows why that is.
I am not bored, for firstly I am writing, and secondly one can feel summer drawing near, which I love above all else. I want to start getting the fishing rods ready.
My regards to Anna Ivanovna, Alexandra Sergeyevna, and the children.
Keep well.
Yours, A. Chekhov
