Island in the Indian Ocean (present-day Sri Lanka), a stop on Chekhov's sea voyage home from Sakhalin via Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Suez Canal; figured repeatedly in his homecoming letters as the 'paradise' counterpart to Sakhalin's 'hell,' and the source of the pet mongooses he brought back to Moscow.
