1 The clock struck twelve noon, and
Major Shchelkolobov, owner of a thousand
desyatinas of land and a young wife, thrust his balding head out from under the
chintz blanket and swore loudly. Yesterday, passing by the summerhouse, he had heard his young wife, the major’s lady
Karolina Karlovna, talking with more than her usual graciousness to her visiting cousin, calling her husband, Major Shchelkolobov, a ram, and arguing with feminine lightmindedness that she had never loved her husband, did not love him now, and never would love him, on account of his, Shchelkolobov’s, dimwittedness, his boorish manners, and his tendency toward lunacy and chronic drunkenness. This treatment from
his wife had struck the major, outraged him, and thrown him into the fiercest indignation. He had not slept the whole night, nor the whole morning. An unaccustomed labor was seething in his head, his face burned and was redder than a boiled crayfish; his fists clenched convulsively, and in his chest such a commotion and pounding went on as the major had never seen or heard even
under Kars. Peering out from under the blanket at God’s daylight and swearing, he leapt from the bed and, shaking his fists, paced the room.
2 “Hey, blockheads!” he shouted.
3 The door crackled, and before the major’s face there appeared
his valet, hairdresser, and floor-scrubber Pantelei, in a cast-off coat from the master’s shoulder and with a puppy under his arm. He propped himself against the doorjamb and blinked respectfully.
4 “Listen, Pantelei,” the major began, “I want to talk to you like a human being, as one man to another, frankly. Stand up straight! Let the flies out of your fist! There, like that! Will you answer me frankly, from the depths of your soul, or not?”
5 “I will, sir.”
6 “Don’t look at me with such astonishment. One mustn’t look at one’s betters with astonishment. Shut your mouth! What an ox you are, brother! You don’t know how to conduct yourself in my presence. Answer me straight, without hesitation! Do you beat your wife, or don’t you?”
7 Pantelei covered his mouth with his hand and smirked most foolishly.
8 “Every Tuesday, your ex’lency!” he muttered, and gave a snicker.
9 “Very good. What are you laughing at? This is no joking matter! Shut your mouth! Don’t scratch yourself in front of me: I don’t care for that.” (The major thought.) “I suppose, brother, that it isn’t only peasants who punish their wives. What’s your opinion on the matter?”
10 “Not only peasants, your ex’lency!”
11 “An example!”
12 “There’s
Judge Pyotr Ivanych in town... Do you know him, sir? I served him as caretaker some ten years back. A fine gentleman, in a word, that is... but once he’s had a drop, watch out. It’d happen, he’d come home with a drop in him, and start shoving
the mistress in the ribs with his fist. May I sink through this very floor if you don’t believe me! And me too, for company, he’d give a jab in the ribs now and then, for no reason at all. He beats the mistress and says: ‘You,’ he says, ‘fool, you don’t love me, so I,’ he says, ‘I mean to kill you for it and put an end to your life...”’
13 “Well, and what does she do?”
14 “Forgive me, she says.”
15 “Well? By God? Why, that’s excellent!”
16 And the major rubbed his hands together with satisfaction.
17 “The honest truth, sir, your ex’lency! And how can one not beat her, your ex’lency? Take, for instance, mine... How can one not beat her! Stamped the little accordion flat and ate the master’s pies... Is that a thing to be allowed? Hm!...”
18 “Now don’t you go reasoning, blockhead! What are you reasoning about? You’ll never manage to say anything sensible, will you? Don’t take on what isn’t your business! What is the mistress doing?”
20 “Well, what will be will be! Go, tell
Marya to wake the mistress and ask her to come to me... Wait!... What do you think, looking at me? Do I look like a peasant?”
21 “Why should you look like one, your ex’lency? Where’s it ever been seen that a master should look like a peasant? Not at all!”
22 Pantelei shrugged his shoulders, the door crackled again, and he went out, while the major, with a preoccupied look on his face, began to wash and dress.
23 “My little soul!” said the major, once dressed, in the most venomously sweet tone imaginable, to the pretty twenty-year-old major’s lady who had just come in to him, “might you spare me an hour of your so very useful time?”
24 “With pleasure, my friend!” answered the major’s lady, and offered her forehead to the major’s lips.
25 “I should like, my little soul, to take a walk, to go out on the lake... Might you not favor me with the company of your charming person?”
26 “But won’t it be hot? Still, if you like, papochka, I’ll be glad to. You shall row and I’ll steer. Shan’t we take some refreshments along? I’m terribly hungry...”
27 “I have already taken my refreshment,” answered the major, and felt in his pocket for his riding-crop.
28 Half an hour after this conversation the major and his lady were rowing out toward the middle of the lake. The major sweated over the oars, while his lady worked the rudder. “What do you say to that? What do you say to that? What do you say to that?” the major muttered, glancing ferociously at his daydreaming wife and burning with impatience. “Stop!” he bellowed, when the boat reached the middle. The boat stopped. The major’s face turned purple and his knees began to shake.
29 “What’s the matter with you, Apollosha?” asked the major’s lady, looking at her husband in astonishment.
30 “So I am,” he began to mutter, “a raaam? So I... I... who am I? So I am dimwitted? So you never loved me and never will love me? So you... I...”
31 The major roared, flung his arms up, brandished the whip in the air, and in the boat there arose... o tempora, o mores! – oh, the times, oh, the manners! – such a commotion as it would be difficult not only to describe but even to imagine. There took place what not even an artist who had traveled to
Italy and possessed the most ardent imagination could depict... Before Major Shchelkolobov had time to notice the absence of vegetation on his own head, before his lady had time to make use of the whip torn from her husband’s hands, the boat capsized, and...
o tempora, o mores!..
32 At this time, along the shore of the lake, there was strolling the major’s former
steward, now the
clerk/">district clerk,
Ivan Pavlovich, who, awaiting that blessed hour when the village girls would come out to bathe in the lake, was whistling, smoking, and pondering the purpose of his stroll. Suddenly he heard a soul-rending cry. In this cry he recognized the voices of his former masters. “Help!” the major and his lady were crying. The clerk, without much thought, threw off his coat, trousers, and boots, crossed himself three times, and swam to the rescue toward the middle of the lake. He swam better than he wrote or made out what was written, and so within some three minutes he was already beside the drowning pair. Ivan Pavlovich swam up to the drowning couple and came to a standstill.
33 “Which one to save?” he thought. “What devils!” Saving both was quite beyond his strength. One alone would be enough for him. He twisted his face into a grimace expressing the utmost bewilderment, and began grabbing now at the major, now at his lady.
34 “One or the other!” he said. “How am I to take the both of you? What am I, a sperm whale?”
35 “Vanya, my dear, save me,” squeaked the trembling major’s lady, clutching at the major’s coattail, “save me! If you save me, I’ll marry you! I swear it by everything holy to me! Ai, ai, I’m drowning!”
36 “Ivan! Ivan Pavlovich! Like a
knight!... there now!” bellowed the major, choking. “Save me, brother! A
ruble for vodka! Be a father and benefactor to me, don’t let me perish in the flower of my years... I’ll gild you head to foot... Come now, save me! What sort of man are you, really... I’ll marry your sister Marya... By God, I’ll marry her! She’s a beauty, your sister. Don’t save the major’s lady, to hell with her! If you don’t save me, I’ll kill you, I won’t let you live!”
37 Ivan Pavlovich’s head began to spin, and he very nearly went under. Both promises seemed to him equally advantageous – one no better than the other. What was he to choose? And there was no time to lose! “I’ll save them both!” he decided. “Better to collect from two than from one. There, that’s the thing, by God. God won’t forsake me, the pig won’t eat me. Lord bless me!” Ivan Pavlovich crossed himself, seized the major’s lady under his right arm, and with the forefinger of that same hand caught the major by the necktie, and swam, grunting, toward the shore. “Kick your legs!” he commanded, rowing with his left arm and dreaming of his brilliant future. “The mistress – a wife, the major – a brother-in-law... Splendid! Live it up, Vanya! Now’s when we’ll eat our fill of pastries and smoke expensive cigars! Glory to Thee, O Lord!” It was hard for Ivan Pavlovich to haul a double burden with one arm and swim against the wind, but the thought of his brilliant future sustained him. Smiling and chuckling with happiness, he delivered the major and his lady to dry land. Great was his joy. But, seeing the major and his lady clinging fast to one another, he... suddenly turned pale, struck himself on the forehead with his fist, burst into sobs, and paid no attention to
the girls who, having climbed out of the water, surrounded the major and his lady in a dense crowd and looked with astonishment at the valiant clerk.
38 The next day Ivan Pavlovich, through the major’s machinations, was dismissed from the district office, and the major’s lady drove Marya out of her apartments with orders to go off “to her dear master.”
39 “Oh, people, people!” Ivan Pavlovich said aloud, walking along the bank of the fateful pond, “and this is what you call gratitude?”

55 “How I Spent My Holidays
56 As soon as I had passed my examinations, I went at once with
Mama, the furniture, and
my brother Ioann, a pupil in the third form of the gymnasium, to the country house. There gathered at our place:
Katya Kuzevich with her mama and papa,
Zina,
little Yegorushka,
Natasha, and many other of my friends, who walked with me and did embroidery in the fresh air. There were many men, but we young ladies kept ourselves apart and paid them no attention whatsoever. I read many books and among them
Meshchersky,
Maikov,
Dumas,
Livanov,
Turgenev, and
Lomonosov. Nature was in her full splendor. The young trees grew very close together, no axe having yet touched their slender trunks, and a shade, not thick but almost unbroken, fell from the small leaves onto the soft, delicate grass, all speckled with the golden heads of buttercups, the white dots of woodland bluebells, and the crimson crosses of pinks (stolen from Turgenev’s “A Quiet Backwater”). The sun now rose, now set. On the spot where the dawn had been, a flock of birds flew by. Somewhere a shepherd was tending his flocks, and some sort of clouds floated a little beneath the sky. I love nature terribly. My papa was troubled all summer: a wicked bank wanted, for no reason at all, to sell our house, and mama kept following after papa, afraid he might lay hands on himself. And if I did spend my holidays well, it is because I occupied myself with learning and behaved myself well. The End.”
57 Arithmetic.
58 Problem. Three merchants contributed capital for a single trading venture, on which, after a year, 8,000 rubles of profit was realized. Required: how much did each of them receive, if the first contributed 35,000, the second 50,000, and the third 70,000?
59 Solution. To solve this problem, one must first find out which of them contributed the most, and for this one must subtract all three numbers one from another, and we shall find, accordingly, that the third merchant contributed the most, because he contributed not 35,000 and not 50,000, but 70,000. Good. Now let us find out how much each of them received, and for this we shall divide 8,000 into three parts so that the largest part falls to the third. We divide: 3 goes into 8 twice. 3x2=6. Good. Subtract 6 from 8 and we get 2. We bring down the zero. Subtract 18 from 20 and we get 2 again. We bring down the zero and so on to the very end. It comes out that we get 2666 2/3, which is what was to be proved, that is, each merchant received 2666 2/3 rubles, and the third, it must be, a little more.”
