1 Strange as it may seem, the one and only crucian carp living in the pond by the
dacha of
General Pantalykin fell head over heels in love with the summer visitor
Sonya Mamochkina. But then, what is so strange about it? Did not
Lermontov’s demon fall in love with
Tamara, and the swan with
Leda, and does it not happen that clerks fall in love with the daughters of their superiors? Every morning Sonya Mamochkina came with
her aunt to bathe. The lovestruck carp swam close to the bank and watched. From its close neighborhood with the
"Krandel Sons" iron foundry the water in the pond had long since turned brown, but for all that
the carp could see everything perfectly well. He saw the white clouds and birds go coursing across the blue sky, saw the summer ladies undress, saw young men peering at them from behind the shoreside bushes, saw how the stout aunt, before going into the water, would sit for some five minutes on a stone and, complacently stroking herself, say: "Now where did I get to be such an elephant? It’s frightening even to look." Having shed her light garments, Sonya would fling herself into the water with a shriek, swim about, shivering from the cold, and the carp, there in an instant, would swim up to her and fall to kissing her little feet, her shoulders, her neck greedily...
2 Once they had bathed, the summer ladies would go home to drink tea with their sweet rolls, and the carp would swim about alone in the enormous pond and think:
3 "Of course, there can be no question of any chance that she’d return my feeling. Could she, so lovely as she is, ever love me, a carp? No, a thousand times no! Do not deceive yourself with dreams, wretched fish! But one fate remains to you – death! But how am I to die? There are no revolvers or phosphorus matches in the pond. For the likes of us, for carps, only one death is possible – to fall prey to a pike. But where is one to get a pike? There was one in the pond once, but even that one died of boredom. Oh, wretched me!"
4 And, brooding on death, the young pessimist would burrow into the mud and write his diary there...
5 One day, toward evening, Sonya and her aunt sat on the bank of the pond angling for fish. The carp swam near the floats, not taking his eyes off the girl he loved. Suddenly an idea flashed through his mind like lightning.
6 "I shall die by her hand!" he thought, and gaily flicked his fins. "Oh, what a wondrous, sweet death that will be!"
7 And, full of resolve, only slightly paling, he swam up to Sonya’s hook and took it into his mouth.
8 "Sonya, you’ve got a bite!" shrieked the aunt. "My dear, you’ve got a bite!"
10 Sonya sprang up and jerked with all her strength. Something golden flashed in the air and plopped back into the water, leaving rings behind it.
11 "It got away!" the two summer ladies cried out, turning pale. "It got away! Ah! My dear!"
12 They looked at the hook and saw a fish’s lip on it.
13 "Ah, my dear," said the aunt, "you oughtn’t to have jerked so hard. Now the poor little fish is left without a lip..."
14 Torn from the hook, my hero was stunned and for a long while could not understand what had happened to him; then, coming to his senses, he groaned:
15 "To live again! Again! Oh, the mockery of fate!"
16 Noticing that he was now missing his lower jaw, the carp turned pale and laughed wildly... He had lost his mind.
17 But I am afraid it may seem strange that I should wish to occupy the attention of the serious reader with the fate of so paltry and uninteresting a creature as a carp. But then, what is so strange about it? Do not the ladies in the fat journals write about gudgeons and snails that nobody needs? And I am only imitating the ladies. It may even be that I am myself a lady, and am merely hiding behind a masculine pseudonym.
18 And so, the carp lost his mind. The unfortunate creature is alive to this day. Carp in general like to be fried in sour cream, but my hero now loves every kind of death. Sonya Mamochkina married the keeper of an apothecary’s shop, and the aunt went off to Lipetsk to her married sister. There is nothing strange in this, since the married sister has six children and all the children love their aunt.
19 But further. At the "Krandel Sons" iron foundry the
director is
an engineer named Krysin. He has
a nephew, Ivan, who, as is well known, writes verses and eagerly gets them printed in every journal and newspaper. One sweltering midday the young poet, passing by the pond, took it into his head to bathe. He undressed and climbed into the pond. The mad carp took him for Sonya Mamochkina, swam up to him, and tenderly kissed him on the back. This kiss had the most disastrous consequences: the carp infected the poet with pessimism. Suspecting nothing, the poet climbed out of the water and, laughing wildly, set off for home. A few days later he went to
Petersburg; having spent some time there in the editorial offices, he infected all the poets with pessimism, and from that time on our poets have taken to writing gloomy, mournful verses.
