General Pantalykin

also: генерал Панталыкин

The owner of the dacha by whose pond the story is set; mentioned only in passing as the possessor of the pond in which the lovestruck carp lives. The surname (from пантолык, "one's bearings/wits") has a mildly comic, addled ring typical of Chekhov's throwaway official names.
