the carp
also: карась
The unnamed crucian carp protagonist of "A Fish's Love" (1892), the pond's sole fish, who falls hopelessly in love with the summer visitor Sonya Mamochkina, contrives to die by taking her fishing hook into his mouth, survives the botched catch with his lower jaw torn off, and goes mad -- later passing his "pessimism" on by kissing a bathing poet.
