A letter of 20 May 1891 to Suvorin marking the family’s move from the Aleksin dacha to Bogimovo, the Kaluga-province estate (upper floor of a grand manor house, formerly referenced as Bylim-Kolosovsky’s house in) where Chekhov would spend much of the summer of 1891 and write "The Duel." Chekhov describes the new house and park in delighted detail, gives Suvorin precise travel directions via Tula and Aleksin, reports good fishing, comments approvingly on two recent imperial manifestos (on the Siberian railway and on easing exile terms), asks after Alexei Alexeyevich Suvorin’s health, and presses Suvorin to visit soon, before the nightingales stop singing and the lilac fades.

I’ve moved to another dacha. What elbow room! At my disposal is the whole upper floor of a great manor house. The rooms are enormous; two of them are the size of your reception hall, even bigger; one has columns; there’s even a musicians’ gallery. When we were setting up the furniture, we wore ourselves out just walking back and forth across such enormous rooms. A beautiful park; a pond, a little river with a mill, a boat – it’s all made up of a great many details, each simply enchanting. If you should take it into your head to come and see me, here is your route: Moscow, then from Moscow the midnight train to Tula (buy your ticket to Aleksin), change trains at Tula onto the one going to Kaluga; arriving at Aleksin in the morning, ask for the driver Gushchin; that fellow will bring you to us with a pair of horses and bells; there are no spring carriages, but Gushchin doesn’t jolt you about. From Aleksin to Bogimovka, where we’re living, is 8–10 versts; but if you’re travelling with only hand luggage, the trip can be arranged shorter, since there’s a little halt-station 4 versts from us.

Комнаты громадные; из них две величиною с Ваш зал, даже больше; одна с колоннами; есть хоры для музыкантов. Когда мы устанавливали мебель, то утомились от непривычного хождения по громадным комнатам. Прекрасный парк; пруд, речка с мельницей, лодка – всё это состоит из множества подробностей, просто очаровательных. Если Вы вздумаете приехать ко мне, то вот Вам маршрут: Москва, из Москвы с двенадцатичасовым ночным поездом в Тулу (брать билет до Алексина), в Туле пересадка на поезд, идущий в Калугу; прибыв утром в Алексин, Вы спрашиваете, где ямщик Гущин; сей человек довезет Вас к нам на паре с колокольчиками; рессорных экипажей нет, но Гущин не трясок. От Алексина до Богимовки, где мы живем, 8–10 верст; если же с Вами будет только ручной багаж, то путь можно устроить покороче, ибо в 4-х верстах от нас есть полустаночек.
The crucian carp are biting beautifully. Yesterday I forgot all my troubles: now sitting by the pond hauling out crucians, now in a corner by the abandoned mill catching perch. The local customs are interesting too.
Караси отлично идут на удочку. Я вчера забыл о всех печалях: то у пруда сижу и таскаю карасей, то в уголке около заброшенной мельницы и ловлю окуней. Интересны и бытовые подробности.
The last two manifestos – about the Siberian railway and about the exiles – pleased me very much. The Siberian railway is called a national undertaking, and the tone of the manifesto guarantees it will soon be finished; and convicts who have served out such-and-such terms of settlement and exile-peasant status are permitted to return to Russia, without the right to live in the capital provinces. The papers let this pass without notice, yet it’s something that has never happened before in Russia – it’s a serious step toward abolishing that lifelong character of punishment which has weighed so long on the public conscience as unjust and cruel in the highest degree.
Последние два манифеста – насчет сибирской дороги и ссыльных – мне очень понравились. Сибирская дорога названа народным делом, и тон манифеста гарантирует ее скорое окончание; а каторжным, кои отбудут такие-то и такие-то поселенческие и ссыльно-крестьянские сроки, разрешается вернуться в Россию, без права жить в столичных губерниях. Это пропустили газеты без внимания, а между тем это нечто такое, чего никогда не было в России,– это серьезный шаг к упразднению той пожизненности наказаний, которая так долго угнетала общественную совесть, как несправедливая и в высшей степени жестокая.
