A local yamshchik (hired driver) at Aleksin station whom Chekhov directs Suvorin to ask for by name; Gushchin would drive visitors by cart (with a pair of horses and bells, no springs) the 8-10 versts on to Bogimovo.

A local yamshchik (coachman-for-hire) at Aleksin whom Chekhov directs Suvorin to ask for by name at the station; he would drive visitors the 8-10 versts on to Bogimovo by cart. Chekhov's aside that "Gushchin doesn't jolt you about" is a small joke of reassurance, since the vehicle has no springs.
