2 Whoever has traveled it surely remembers the
Andreyevsky mill too, standing alone on the bank of the little river Kozyavka. The mill is small, with two runs of stones... It is more than a hundred years old, it has long since stopped working, and so it is no wonder that it resembles a little, hunchbacked, ragged old woman, ready to topple over any minute. And this old woman would have toppled over long ago, if she had not been leaning against an old, broad willow. The willow is broad – two men could not join hands around it. Its glossy foliage hangs down over the roof, over the dam; the lower branches bathe in the water and trail along the ground. It too is old and bent. Its humped trunk is disfigured by a large dark hollow. Put your hand into the hollow and your hand will sink into black honey. Wild bees will buzz around your head and sting you. How old is it?
Arkhip, its friend, says that it was already old back when he served his master among the "French," and then his mistress among the "blacks" – and that was too long ago to say.
3 The willow props up another ruin as well – old Arkhip, who sits at its root from dawn to dusk fishing. He is old, bent, like the willow, and his toothless mouth resembles the hollow. By day he fishes, and by night he sits at the root and thinks. The two of them,
the old woman-willow and Arkhip, whisper day and night... The two of them in their time have seen a great deal. Listen to them...
4 Some thirty years ago, on
Willow Sunday, on the name-day of the old woman-willow, the old man sat in his usual spot, looked at the spring, and fished... All around it was quiet, as always... Only the whisper of the two old ones could be heard, and now and then a fish out for a stroll splashed. The old man fished and waited out the day. At noon he would begin to cook his fish soup. When the willow’s shadow began to move off the far bank, that meant noon had come. Arkhip also told the time by the post bells. At exactly noon the T. mail coach would cross the dam.
5 And on this Sunday Arkhip thought he heard the bells. He set down his rod and began looking toward the dam. A
troika came over the rise, went down, and made its way at a walk toward the dam. The postman was asleep. Having come onto the dam, the troika stopped for some reason. It had been a long time since anything surprised Arkhip, but this time he had cause to be greatly surprised. Something out of the ordinary happened. The driver looked around, stirred uneasily, pulled the kerchief from the postman’s face, and swung a bludgeon. The postman did not move. On his fair head a crimson stain opened up. The driver jumped down from the cart and, swinging again, struck a second blow. A minute later Arkhip heard footsteps near him: the driver was coming down from the bank and walking straight toward him... His sunburned face was pale, his eyes stared dully at nothing in particular. Trembling all over, he ran up to the willow and, not noticing Arkhip, thrust the mail sack into the hollow; then he ran back up, jumped onto the cart, and, strange as it seemed to Arkhip, struck himself a blow on the temple. Having smeared his own face with blood, he lashed the horses.
6 "Help! Murder!" he cried out.
7 An echo answered him, and for a long time Arkhip could still hear that "murder."
8 Some six days later an inquiry came out to the mill. They took a plan of the mill and the dam, measured the depth of the river for some reason, and, having dined under the willow, drove off again, while Arkhip, all through the inquiry, sat under the wheel, trembled, and stared into the sack. Inside it he saw envelopes with five seals. Day and night he stared at these seals and thought, while the old woman-willow was silent by day and wept by night. "Fool!" thought Arkhip, listening to her weeping. A week later Arkhip was already on his way to town with the sack.
10 They pointed him to a large yellow house with a striped sentry box by the door. He went in and in the front hall saw a gentleman with bright buttons. The gentleman was smoking a pipe and scolding
the watchman for something. Arkhip went up to him and, trembling all over, told the story of the incident with the old woman-willow. The official took the sack in his hands, undid the straps, turned pale, turned red.
11 "At once!" he said, and ran off into the office. There officials surrounded him... They scurried about, bustled, whispered... Ten minutes later the official brought Arkhip the sack back out and said:
12 "You’ve come to the wrong place, brother. You go to Nizhnyaya Street, they’ll direct you there – this here is the
treasury, my dear fellow! You go to the police."
13 Arkhip took the sack and went out.
14 "Well, the sack’s gotten lighter!" he thought. "Half as heavy as it was!"
15 On Nizhnyaya Street they pointed him to another yellow house, with two sentry boxes. Arkhip went in. There was no front hall here, and the office began right from the stairs. The old man went up to one of the desks and told the clerks the story of the sack. They snatched the sack out of his hands, shouted at him a bit, and sent for the chief. A stout man with a mustache appeared. After a brief questioning he took the sack and shut himself up with it in another room.
16 "And where’s the money?" a voice was heard a minute later from that room. "The sack’s empty! Tell the old man, though, he can go! Or hold him! Take him to
Ivan Markovich! No, never mind, let him go!"
17 Arkhip bowed and went out. A day later
the crucian carp and the perch were once again looking at his gray beard...
18 It happened in deep autumn. The old man sat and fished. His face was as gloomy as the yellowed willow: he did not love autumn. His face grew even gloomier when he saw the driver beside him. The driver, not noticing him, went up to the willow and thrust his hand into the hollow. Bees, wet and sluggish, crawled up his sleeve. Having felt around a little, he turned pale, and an hour later he was sitting over the river staring senselessly into the water.
19 "Where is it?" he asked Arkhip.
20 Arkhip was silent at first and sullenly kept his distance from the murderer, but soon he took pity on him.
21 "I carried it to the authorities!" he said. "But you, fool, don’t be afraid... I told them there that I found it under the willow..."
22 The driver jumped up, roared, and threw himself at Arkhip. For a long time he beat him. He battered the old man’s old face, knocked him to the ground, trampled him with his feet. Having beaten the old man, he did not leave him, but stayed on to live at the mill, together with Arkhip.
23 By day he slept and was silent, and by night he walked along the dam. Along the dam wandered the postman’s shadow, and he conversed with it. Spring came, and the driver went on being silent and wandering still. One night the old man came up to him.
24 "Enough of your wandering about, fool!" he said to him, glancing sidelong at the postman. "Go away."
25 And the postman said the very same thing... And the willow whispered the very same...
26 "I cannot!" said the driver. "I would go, but my legs ache, my soul aches!"
27 The old man took the driver by the arm and led him into town. He led him to Nizhnyaya Street, to that very same office where he had handed in the sack. The driver fell on his knees before the "chief" and confessed. The man with the mustache was astonished.
28 "What are you slandering yourself for, you fool!" he said. "Drunk? Want me to lock you up in the cold cell? They’ve all gone mad, the wretches! Only muddying the business... The criminal wasn’t found – well, and there’s an end to it! What more do you want? Get out of here!"
29 When the old man reminded him about the sack, the man with the mustache burst out laughing, and the clerks were astonished. Their memory, it seems, is poor... The driver found no absolution on Nizhnyaya Street. He had to go back to the willow...
30 And he had to flee from his conscience into the water, to disturb that very spot where Arkhip’s floats swim. The driver drowned himself. On the dam two shadows can be seen now, the old man and the old woman-willow... Is it not with them that they whisper?
