Egorushka conceals his smoking from his father, Chekhov's devout uncle Mitrofan Yegorovich, a pious Taganrog merchant; the household (here his mother, L. P.) colludes in hiding the "filial sin" from him -- a small domestic instance of religious observance shaping family behavior, left as in the original.
