Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 20 September 1886 to Nikolai Leikin, Chekhov’s editor at the Petersburg humor magazine Oskolki (Splinters) and his most frequent correspondent of these years. Chekhov apologizes for his delay in writing, blaming a chaotic move to a new flat on the Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya, near-total lack of money (he has pawned his watch and a gold coin), and a recent bout of "cholerine" (a mild cholera-like intestinal complaint) that has left him unwell. He fills Leikin in on the Moscow humor-press scene – the fortunes of rival journals Budilnik, Razvlechenie, and the fast-rising Strekoza (The Cricket) – comments on actors and journalists of the day, and asks after Leikin’s dacha, dogs, and household.

2 The letter is a vivid specimen of Chekhov’s private comic voice: rapid, gossipy, self-deprecating, and unconcerned with polish, written to a close professional friend rather than for publication. It captures his precarious finances and health in the mid-1880s, just as he was beginning to establish himself, and offers a snapshot of the competitive Moscow-Petersburg humor-magazine market he depended on for income.

Kindest
I am not writing to you at once upon my arrival, as I promised in my last letter, but a week later. The bustle of moving, the fuss of furnishing the rooms, the fumes of the new flat, and utter lack of money have quite knocked me off my stride. And then, as though for a relish, the day before yesterday a bout of cholerine struck me, from which I still have not recovered. Now to business... Today I received 20 copies of my book from your office. Merci for the trouble. Nothing whatsoever new. I haven’t seen Palmin. Agafopod is in Moscow, Nikolai doesn’t show himself... I am living in Kudrino on the Sadovaya – a clean, quiet place, close to everything, not like Yakimanka. How are you getting on, and is there anything new in the realm of the "Splinters"? Is all well, and is the sky clear on the humorous horizon? A propos, the Moscow humorists are thriving... "The Alarm-Clock" is stuck at its old freezing point, "Entertainment" has perished (though it did get rid of Kicheev), but on the other hand "The Cricket" is growing not by the day but by the hour. The Werner brothers keep rolling off to Paris and back. They’ve bought themselves a printing house, installed a gas engine, a stencil press, brought in a Parisian named Luc and so on and so forth. They live like swells. Their "Around the World" has more than 20 thousand subscribers, and "The Cricket" has reached 5 thousand. What fellows, eh? So much for waistcoats and horses. Energetic as the devil, and one can vouch they won’t be dislodged from the position they now hold.
I am in a state of utter moneylessness. Would you believe it, I’ve pawned my watch and a gold coin. A dreadfully stupid position! A week ago I wrote to Buylov asking him to send me my fee, but to this day I have received no answer. I like "New Time": it sends the money at once upon request, but Buylov scratches himself unbearably long. Does everyone really get their money from him so sluggishly?
You are still living at the dacha... I don’t envy you, though there’s nothing merry in my city life either. I sit at home and occasionally go to watch Davydov, who is now performing at Korsh’s. My, how Petersburg let slip what an actor!
I’m running to the privy, for the urge has struck... I’m still being purged after the cholerine...
Sitting in the privy, for some reason I recalled Pastukhov. He is still in his old strength and glory. Hosts of Gersons and Pazukhins hover about him and sing to him: "Rejoice!..". "News of the Day" suffers from the English disease. The fare is wretched. "Russian Gazette" withers and withers from too much intellect, "The Courier" has sunk altogether...
Write to me about Tosna, about your hounds, about the post office, where Apel got into a fight with the cat... Is the factory with the sooty chimney still poking up near your house, and is Tosna still choked with barges? One thing about your place is unbearable – the crowds of people...
My regards to Praskovya Nikiforovna and Fedya. I await a letter from you. In my last letter I gave you my new address. In case it was lost, I give it again:
Sadovaya-Kudrino, the Korneev house.
I imagine how cold and damp it must be to travel by steamer now! It’s just as well vodka isn’t dear... On the "Georgy" the corned beef is very tasty and cheap.
Give my regards to everyone at the editorial office and the counting house. With that I shake your hand and remain
