A Man's Conversation with a Dog

Разговор человека с собакой

Headnote

"A Man’s Conversation with a Dog" ("Разговор человека с собакой") dates from 1884, the Antosha Chekhonte years, when Chekhov was turning out short comic sketches for the Moscow humor weeklies at speed while finishing his medical studies. It is built on a single, sustained absurdity: a tipsy minor official, Alexei Ivanych Romansov, stumbles into his own courtyard at night, meets a chained watchdog, and proceeds to conduct an entire one-sided confession – philosophical, political, and finally criminal – at the animal, mistaking its growls and bites for a kind of interrogation.

The comedy runs on the gap between Romansov’s grandiose posturing – "man is the crown of creation," a phrase he repeats as if daring the dog to disagree – and the sordid particulars that leak out once he starts talking: an embezzled two hundred roubles, a colleague ruined in his place, a fur coat bought on the proceeds of betrayal. He accuses the dog of Enlightenment principles ("so you’re a socialist, then!") for declining to accept his self-importance, and then, drunker still, begins goading it to bite him in earnest, as though the animal’s teeth were the honest judgment no human associate has ever had the nerve to deliver. The final image – Romansov waking the next noon bandaged head to foot, his wife in tears at the bedside – lets the reader supply the moral Chekhov declines to state outright.

The source text breaks off after the story proper with a bare "Примечания" (Notes) heading followed by a truncated editorial fragment; that fragment is not part of the story and has been left untranslated.

Романсов покрутил головой и сплюнул.
