Headnote
1 "An Event" (1886) is a brief, deceptively simple story told almost entirely through the eyes of two young children, six-year-old Vanya and his four-year-old sister Nina. Waking to the news that the family cat has given birth, they abandon every ordinary routine – breakfast, dressing, prayers – for the all-consuming wonder of the kittens. Chekhov renders a child’s-eye view of the household with great tenderness and comedy: the children build the kittens cardboard houses, appoint a broken toy horse (and later the neighbor’s Great Dane, Nero) as the kittens’ "father," and plan out solemn futures for each one, all while the adults around them treat the whole affair as a mild household nuisance.
2 The story’s turn comes when the kittens’ presence causes real friction with the adult world – a ruined document in the father’s study, a kitten smuggled to the dinner table – and the father, exasperated, orders them thrown out. The children’s tearful pleading wins a reprieve, but it proves short-lived: Nero, let loose near the crate, eats the kittens, and the adults respond with laughter rather than alarm. The story closes on the children’s private grief, put to bed in tears, brooding over the wronged mother cat and the dog who goes unpunished. Chekhov’s restraint is the story’s power: he never editorializes on the adults’ callousness, letting the children’s solemn seriousness and the grown-ups’ amused indifference speak for themselves.
Morning. Through the linen lace curtaining the windowpanes, bright sunlight breaks into the nursery. Vanya, a boy of about six, close-cropped, with a nose like a little button, and his sister Nina, a four-year-old girl, curly-haired, plump, small for her age, wake up and glare crossly at each other through the bars of their little beds.

"Ah, you shameless creatures!" grumbles the nanny. "Good folk have already had their tea, and here you are, can’t even pry your eyes open..."
– У-у-у, бесстыдники! – ворчит нянька. – Добрые люди уж чаю напившись, а вы никак глаз не продерете...
The sunbeams play merrily on the carpet, on the walls, on the hem of the nanny’s skirt, as if inviting the children to play with them, but the children take no notice. They have woken up out of sorts. Nina pouts, pulls a sour face, and begins to whine:
Солнечные лучи весело шалят на ковре, на стенах, на подоле няньки и как бы приглашают поиграть с ними, но дети не замечают их. Они проснулись не в духе. Нина надувает губы, делает кислое лицо и начинает тянуть:
"Te-e-ea! Nanny, te-e-ea!"

Vanya knits his brow and thinks: what can I find to pick at, so as to start howling? He has already begun blinking and opened his mouth, but just then Mama’s voice carries in from the drawing room:

"Don’t forget to give the cat some milk – she has kittens now!"

Vanya and Nina’s faces stretch in astonishment; they stare at each other in bewilderment, then both shriek at once, leap from their beds, and, filling the air with piercing squeals, run barefoot, in nothing but their little shirts, to the kitchen.
Ваня и Нина вытягивают физиономии и с недоумением глядят друг на друга, потом оба разом вскрикивают, прыгают с кроваток и, оглашая воздух пронзительным визгом, бегут босиком, в одних рубашонках в кухню.
"The cat’s had kittens!" they cry. "The cat’s had kittens!"
– Кошка ощенилась! – кричат они. – Кошка ощенилась!
In the kitchen, under the bench, stands a small crate – the very one Stepan uses to carry coke for the fireplace. The cat peers out of the crate. Her grey little face wears an expression of the utmost weariness, her green eyes with their narrow black pupils gaze languidly, sentimentally... One can see from her face that for her happiness to be complete, only one thing is lacking – the presence in the crate of "him," the father of her children, to whom she gave herself so recklessly! She wants to mew, opens her mouth wide, but from her throat comes only a wheeze... The squeak of kittens can be heard.

Ее серая рожица выражает крайнее утомление, зеленые глаза с узкими черными зрачками глядят томно, сентиментально... По роже видно, что для полноты ее счастья не хватает только присутствия в ящике "его", отца ее детей, которому она так беззаветно отдалась! Хочет она промяукать, широко раскрывает рот, но из горла ее выходит одно только сипенье... Слышится писк котят.
The children crouch down before the crate and, without stirring, holding their breath, stare at the cat... They are amazed, thunderstruck, and do not hear the nanny grumbling as she chases after them. In both their eyes shines the most heartfelt joy.
Дети садятся на корточки перед ящиком и, не шевелясь, притаив дыхание, глядят на кошку... Они удивлены, поражены и не слышат, как ворчит погнавшаяся за ними нянька. В глазах обоих светится самая искренняя радость.
In the raising and the lives of children, household animals play a barely noticeable but undoubtedly beneficial role. Which of us does not remember the strong but magnanimous dogs, the idle lapdogs, the birds that died in captivity, the dim-witted but haughty turkeys, the meek old cats who forgave us when, for the fun of it, we trod on their tails and caused them agonizing pain? It even seems to me sometimes that the patience, fidelity, all-forgiveness, and sincerity present in our household creatures act upon a child’s mind far more strongly and positively than the long lectures of dry, pallid Karl Karlovich, or the hazy discourses of a governess laboring to prove to the little ones that water is made of oxygen and hydrogen.
В воспитании и в жизни детей домашние животные играют едва заметную, но несомненно благотворную роль. Кто из нас не помнит сильных, но великодушных псов, дармоедок-болонок, птиц, умиравших в неволе, тупоумных, но надменных индюков, кротких старух-кошек, прощавших нам, когда мы ради забавы наступали им на хвосты и причиняли им мучительную боль? Мне даже иногда кажется, что терпение, верность, всепрощение и искренность, какие присущи нашим домашним тварям, действуют на ум ребенка гораздо сильнее и положительнее, чем длинные нотации сухого и бледного Карла Карловича или же туманные разглагольствования гувернантки, старающейся доказать ребятам, что вода состоит из кислорода и водорода.
"How tiny they are!" says Nina, opening her eyes wide and dissolving into merry laughter. "They look like little mice!"
– Какие маленькие! – говорит Нина, делая большие глаза и заливаясь веселым смехом. – Похожи на мышов!
"One, two, three..." counts Vanya. "Three kittens. So that means one for me, one for you, and one more for somebody else."
– Раз, два, три... – считает Ваня. – Три котенка. Значит, мне одного, тебе одного и еще кому-нибудь одного.
"Purrrm... purrrm..." purrs the new mother, flattered by the attention. "Purrrm."
– Мурррм... мурррм... – мурлычет роженица, польщенная вниманием. – Мурррм.
Having had their fill of gazing at the kittens, the children take them out from under the cat and begin squeezing them in their hands, and then, not satisfied with that, tuck them into the folds of their shirts and run into the rooms.
Наглядевшись на котят, дети берут их из-под кошки и начинают мять в руках, потом, не удовлетворившись этим, кладут их в подолы рубах и бегут в комнаты.
"Mama, the cat’s had kittens!" they cry.
– Мама, кошка ощенилась! – кричат они.
Mother is sitting in the drawing room with some unfamiliar gentleman. Seeing the children, unwashed, undressed, their shirt-hems hiked up, she is embarrassed and puts on a stern face.
Мать сидит в гостиной с каким-то незнакомым господином. Увидев детей, неумытых, неодетых, с задранными вверх подолами, она конфузится и делает строгие глаза.
"Put your shirts down, shameless creatures!" she says. "Off you go, or I’ll punish you."
– Опустите рубахи, бесстыдники! – говорит она. – Подите отсюда, а то я вас накажу.
But the children take no notice either of their mother’s threats or of the stranger’s presence. They set the kittens down on the carpet and raise a deafening squeal. The new mother paces around them, mewing imploringly. When, a little later, the children are dragged off to the nursery, dressed, stood up for prayers, and given their tea, they are filled with a passionate desire to be rid of these prosaic obligations as quickly as possible and run back to the kitchen.
Но дети не замечают ни угроз матери, ни присутствия чужого человека. Они кладут котят на ковер и поднимают оглушительный визг. Около них ходит роженица и умоляюще мяукает. Когда, немного погодя, детей тащат в детскую, одевают их, ставят на молитву и поят чаем, они полны страстного желания поскорее отделаться от этих прозаических повинностей и опять бежать в кухню.
Their usual occupations and games recede into the very back of their minds.

The kittens’ arrival in the world eclipses everything and stands out as living news, the topic of the day. If Vanya or Nina had been offered a whole pood of sweets or a thousand ten-kopeck pieces for each kitten, they would have rejected such a bargain without a moment’s hesitation. Right up until dinner, despite the vehement protests of the nanny and the cook, they sit in the kitchen by the crate, fussing over the kittens. Their faces are serious, intent, and full of concern. What troubles them is not only the kittens’ present but also their future. They have decided that one kitten will stay home with the old cat, to comfort its mother, another will go to the summer house, and the third will live in the cellar, where there are ever so many rats.
Котята своим появлением на свет затемняют всё и выступают как живая новость и злоба дня. Если бы Ване или Нине за каждого котенка предложили по пуду конфет или по тысяче гривенников, то они отвергли бы такую мену без малейшего колебания. До самого обеда, несмотря на горячие протесты няньки и кухарки, они сидят в кухне около ящика и возятся с котятами. Лица их серьезны, сосредоточены и выражают заботу. Их тревожит не только настоящее, но и будущее котят. Они порешили, что один котенок останется дома при старой кошке, чтобы утешать свою мать, другой поедет на дачу, третий будет жить в погребе, где очень много крыс.
"But why won’t they look at anything?" wonders Nina. "Their eyes are blind, like a beggar’s."
– Но отчего они не глядят? – недоумевает Нина. – У них глаза слепые, как у нищих.
This question troubles Vanya too. He undertakes to open one kitten’s eyes, puffing and huffing for a long while, but his operation comes to nothing. He is also considerably troubled by the fact that the kittens stubbornly refuse the meat and milk offered to them. Everything set before their little snouts gets eaten up by their grey mama.
И Ваню беспокоит этот вопрос. Он берется открыть одному котенку глаза, долго пыхтит и сопит, но операция его остается безуспешной. Немало также беспокоит и то обстоятельство, что котята упорно отказываются от предлагаемых им мяса и молока. Всё, что кладется перед их мордочками, съедается серой мамашей.
"Let’s build the kittens some houses," Vanya proposes. "They’ll live in different houses, and the cat can go visiting them..."
– Давай построим котятам домики, – предлагает Ваня. – Они будут жить в разных домах, а кошка будет к ним в гости ходить...
Hatboxes are set up in various corners of the kitchen. The kittens are settled into them. But this division of the family proves premature: the cat, keeping her imploring, sentimental expression, makes the rounds of all the boxes and carries her children back to their old place.
В разных углах кухни ставятся картонки из-под шляп. В них поселяются котята. Но такой семейный раздел оказывается преждевременным: кошка, сохраняя на рожице умоляющее и сентиментальное выражение, обходит все картонки и сносит своих детей на прежнее место.
"The cat’s their mother," Vanya observes, "but who’s the father?"
– Кошка ихняя мать, – замечает Ваня, – а кто отец?
"Yes, who is the father?" Nina echoes.
– Да, кто отец? – повторяет Нина.
"They can’t do without a father."
– Без отца им нельзя.
Vanya and Nina deliberate for a long time over who is to be the kittens’ father, and in the end their choice falls upon a large, dark-red horse with its tail torn off, which lies about in the storeroom under the stairs, living out its days among the other discarded toys. They drag it out of the storeroom and stand it beside the crate.
Ваня и Нина долго решают, кому быть отцом котят, и в конце концов выбор их падает на большую темно-красную лошадь с оторванным хвостом, которая валяется в кладовой под лестницей и вместе с другим игрушечным хламом доживает свой век. Ее тащат из кладовой и ставят около ящика.
"Now mind!" they threaten it. "Stand there and see that they behave themselves properly."
– Смотри же! – грозят ей. – Стой тут и гляди, чтобы они вели себя прилично.
All this is said and carried out in the most solemn manner, with an expression of concern on their faces. Apart from the crate of kittens, Vanya and Nina wish to know of no other world. Their joy knows no bounds. But hard, agonizing moments are also in store for them.
Всё это говорится и проделывается серьезнейшим образом и с выражением заботы на лице. Кроме ящика с котятами, Ваня и Нина не хотят знать никакого другого мира. Радость их не имеет пределов. Но приходится переживать и тяжелые, мучительные минуты.
Just before dinner, Vanya sits in his father’s study, gazing dreamily at the desk. Beside the lamp, on a sheet of official letterhead, a kitten is squirming about. Vanya watches its movements and pokes at its little snout, now with a pencil, now with a match... Suddenly, as if sprung up out of the ground, his father appears by the desk.
Перед самым обедом Ваня сидит в кабинете отца и мечтательно глядит на стол. Около лампы на гербовой бумаге ворочается котенок. Ваня следит за его движениями и тычет ему в мордочку то карандашом, то спичкой... Вдруг, точно из земли выросши, около стола появляется отец.
"What is this?" Vanya hears an angry voice.
– Это что такое? – слышит Ваня сердитый голос.
"It’s... it’s a little kitten, Papa..."
– Это... это котеночек, папа...
"I’ll show you a little kitten! Look what you’ve done, you wretched boy! You’ve smeared ink all over my paper!"
– Вот я тебе покажу котеночка! Погляди, что ты наделал, негодный мальчишка! Ты у меня всю бумагу испачкал!
To Vanya’s great astonishment, Papa does not share his fondness for the kittens, and instead of being delighted and overjoyed, he yanks Vanya by the ear and shouts:
К великому удивлению Вани, папа не разделяет его симпатий к котятам и, вместо того, чтоб прийти в восхищение и обрадоваться, он дергает Ваню за ухо и кричит:
"Stepan, take this filthy thing away!"
– Степан, убери эту гадость!
At dinner there is a scandal too... During the second course, those at the table suddenly hear a squeaking. They begin to search for the cause and find a kitten under Nina’s little apron.
За обедом тоже скандал... Во время второго блюда обедающие вдруг слышат писк. Начинают доискиваться причины и находят у Нины под фартучком котенка.
"Ninka, away from the table!" Father grows angry. "Throw those kittens in the slop bucket this instant! I won’t have that filth in the house!.."
– Нинка, вон из-за стола! – сердится отец. – Сию же минуту выбросить котят в помойку! Чтоб этой гадости не было в доме!..
Vanya and Nina are horrified. Death in the slop bucket, apart from its sheer cruelty, threatens also to rob the cat and the wooden horse of their children, to empty out the crate, to shatter the plans for the future, that splendid future in which one cat was to comfort his old mother, another to live at the summer house, and the third to catch rats in the cellar... The children begin to cry and beg that the kittens be spared. Father relents, but on condition that the children not dare go into the kitchen or touch the kittens.
Ваня и Нина в ужасе. Смерть в помойке, помимо своей жестокости, грозит еще отнять у кошки и деревянной лошади их детей, опустошить ящик, разрушить планы будущего, того прекрасного будущего, когда один кот будет утешать свою старуху-мать, другой – жить на даче, третий – ловить крыс в погребе... Дети начинают плакать и умолять пощадить котят. Отец соглашается, но с условием, чтобы дети не смели ходить в кухню и трогать котят.
After dinner, Vanya and Nina wander wretchedly through all the rooms. The ban on going into the kitchen has plunged them into gloom. They refuse sweets, act capricious, and are rude to their mother. When Uncle Petrusha arrives that evening, they draw him aside and complain to him about their father, who wanted to throw the kittens in the slop bucket.
После обеда Ваня и Нина слоняются по всем комнатам и томятся. Запрещение ходить в кухню повергло их в уныние. Они отказываются от сладостей, капризничают и грубят матери. Когда вечером приходит дядя Петруша, они отводят его в сторону и жалуются ему на отца, который хотел бросить котят в помойку.
"Uncle Petrusha," they beg their uncle, "tell Mama to have the kittens brought into the nursery. Please te-e-ell her!"
– Дядя Петруша, – просят они дядю, – скажи маме, чтобы котят в детскую поставили. Ска-а-жи!
"Now, now... all right!" their uncle waves them off. "Fine, fine."
– Ну, ну... хорошо! – отмахивается от них дядя. – Ладно.
Uncle Petrusha usually does not come alone. With him comes Nero as well, a big black Great Dane, with drooping ears and a tail as stiff as a stick. This dog is taciturn, gloomy, and full of a sense of his own dignity. He pays not the slightest attention to the children, and as he strides past them, thumps them with his tail as if they were chairs. The children hate him with all their hearts, but this time practical considerations get the better of their feelings.
Дядя Петруша приходит обыкновенно не один. С ним является и Неро, большой черный пес датской породы, с отвислыми ушами и с хвостом, твердым, как палка. Этот пес молчалив, мрачен и полон чувства собственного достоинства. На детей он не обращает ни малейшего внимания и, шагая мимо них, стучит по ним своим хвостом, как по стульям. Дети ненавидят его всей душой, но на этот раз практические соображения берут у них верх над чувством.
"You know what, Nina?" says Vanya, opening his eyes wide. "Let Nero be the father instead of the horse! The horse is dead, but he’s alive."
– Знаешь что, Нина? – говорит Ваня, делая большие глаза. – Вместо лошади пусть Неро будет отцом! Лошадь дохлая, а ведь он живой.
All evening they wait for the moment when Papa sits down to play vint, so that they can slip Nero unnoticed into the kitchen... At last Papa sits down to cards, Mama is busy with the samovar and does not see the children... The happy moment arrives.
Весь вечер они ждут того времени, когда папа усядется играть в винт и можно будет незаметно провести Неро в кухню... Вот, наконец, папа садится за карты, мама хлопочет за самоваром и не видит детей... Наступает счастливый момент.
"Let’s go!" Vanya whispers to his sister.
– Пойдем! – шепчет Ваня сестре.
But at that moment Stepan comes in and announces with a laugh:
Но в это время входит Степан и со смехом объявляет:
"Ma’am, Nero’s eaten the kittens!"
– Барыня, Нера котят съела!
Nina and Vanya turn pale and stare at Stepan in horror.
Нина и Ваня бледнеют и с ужасом глядят на Степана.
"Word of honor, sir..." laughs the footman. "Went right up to the crate and gobbled them down."
– Ей-богу-с... – смеется лакей. – Подошла к ящику и сожрала.
The children imagine that everyone in the house, however many there are, will be up in arms and fall upon the villain Nero. But the people sit calmly in their places, only marveling at the huge dog’s appetite. Papa and Mama laugh... Nero paces by the table, wagging his tail and licking his chops with self-satisfaction... Only the cat is troubled. Her tail stretched out, she paces through the rooms, eyeing the people suspiciously and mewing plaintively.
Детям кажется, что все люди, сколько их есть в доме, всполошатся и набросятся на злодея Неро. Но люди сидят покойно на своих местах и только удивляются аппетиту громадной собаки. Папа и мама смеются... Неро ходит у стола, помахивает хвостом и самодовольно облизывается... Обеспокоена одна только кошка. Вытянув свой хвост, она ходит по комнатам, подозрительно поглядывает на людей и жалобно мяукает.
"Children, it’s already gone nine! Time for bed!" Mama calls out.
– Дети, уже десятый час! Пора спать! – кричит мама.
Vanya and Nina go to bed, cry, and lie awake a long while thinking of the wronged cat and of cruel, insolent, unpunished Nero.
Ваня и Нина ложатся спать, плачут и долго думают об обиженной кошке и жестоком, наглом, ненаказанном Неро.
