A former court bailiff of about thirty-three, educated and once a passionate moralist about the town's corruption, confined in Ward No. 6 with persecution mania. His long philosophical debates with Dr. Andrei Yefimych -- arguing that the doctor's Stoic-inflected indifference to suffering is a comfortable philosophy for a man who has never truly suffered -- form the intellectual core of "Ward No. 6."
