The Kulachye's Nest
Кулачье гнездо
Headnote
"The Kulachye’s Nest" (1884) is a dacha-season sketch of the kind Chekhov turned out often in these years: a decayed manor estate carved up into cheap summer cottages, its steward leading a string of prospective tenants past the wreckage of what was once a gentry household. The comedy is in the mismatch between the tenants’ fastidious complaints and the steward’s flat, unembarrassed sales patter – including a macabre aside about coffins turned up under one converted outbuilding.
