Headnote
"Krasnaya Gorka" appeared in 1884, in the fast, feuilleton-driven middle years of Chekhov’s apprenticeship in the Moscow comic press. The piece takes its name from St. Thomas’s Week, the first week after Easter in the Russian Orthodox calendar, and the folk festival – "Krasnaya Gorka," literally "the red hillock" – that fell within it: a spring rite with roots older than Christian Russia, when villagers gathered on the first bare, sun-warmed high ground to sing and dance, and which by Chekhov’s day had also become the traditional opening of the post-Lenten wedding season.
The essay is built in Chekhov’s mock-antiquarian register: it pretends to trace the festival from its pagan origins among the Drevlyans and Krivichi down to its debased nineteenth-century form – graveyard picnics, drunken round dances broken up by a constable, and above all a "matrimonial itch" that seizes brides, grooms, and calculating fathers alike the moment Lent’s prohibition on marriage lifts. Along the way it glances, in Chekhov’s typically oblique fashion, at censorship, at clerical poverty, and at the absurdities of translation between Russian and German.
The text as staged here also carries, appended without a title division in the source, a short independent comic sketch: a mock "Report," written in the stilted, self-important idiom of a rural constable’s official correspondence, describing the discovery of a beggar’s suicide. It is signed with one of Chekhov’s regular early pseudonyms, "A Man Without a Spleen" ("Человек без селезенки"), the same signature he used across many of his 1883-1885 sketches for the Moscow humor weeklies. The bureaucratic report as comic form – overwrought formality applied to squalid, undignified fact – was one of young Chekhov’s recurring targets, and this brief piece is a compact instance of it. Two bare "Notes" headers, without accompanying text, are artifacts of how this particular text has come down in the source edition and are preserved here as their own sections rather than silently dropped.
