Something About A. S. Dargomyzhsky
Кое-что об а. с. даргомыжском
Headnote
This short 1884 sketch is framed as two anecdotes ("byli") about the composer Alexander Dargomyzhsky, said to have been related to the narrator by an acquaintance. It belongs to the loose genre of feuilleton table-talk Chekhov contributed regularly to the comic press in these years – brief, gossipy, only half-serious literary and musical anecdotes traded on the authority of a supposed eyewitness.
The piece is minor even by the standards of Chekhov’s apprentice journalism, but it is characteristic of his early habit of using real cultural figures as pegs for a joke, and of the anecdote-as-genre that recurs throughout his 1880s feuilleton work.
