Chaos in Rome

Кавардак в Риме

Headnote

"Кавардак в Риме" ("Chaos in Rome," 1884) is a mock playbill and theatrical parody – a "comic oddity in three acts" complete with cast list, prologue, and epilogue – lampooning the spectacular, effects-heavy productions of the Moscow impresario Mikhail Lentovsky and his circle. Real theatrical figures of the day (Lentovsky, the architect and stage designer Fyodor Shekhtel) appear as characters alongside invented, symbolic ones – the Box Office, the Big Take and the Little Take – in a send-up of spectacle-driven theater more interested in trapdoors and scene changes than plot.

The play’s text had been mis-staged inside the source file for the unrelated story "Надлежащие меры" ("Proper Measures"); it has been extracted and staged here as its own work.
