Headnote
A newly graduated Chekhov, having just passed his medical examinations, writes to his editor and publisher Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin with a mix of business and banter. He reports on the release of his first book, "Tales of Melpomene," asks Leikin to arrange advertising for it in the "Petersburg Gazette" (but not in "Oskolki"), and gives instructions for sending his fee to Voskresensk, where he is about to spend the summer with his family. Along the way he needles Leikin over an edited line in one of his own feuilletons and asks after the poet Liodor Palmin’s abandoned travel plans.

After the hard examinations, as was to be expected, I have grown terribly lazy. I loll about, smoke, and function, the rest being heavy labor. It is especially hard to write feuilletons. The weather, apart from the daily rains, is magnificent... Not conducive to work...

The day before yesterday I sent you my newborn little book, "Tales of Melpomene." I published this little book on impulse, out of idleness, in a slapdash way...
Третьего дня я послал Вам свою новорожденную книжицу "Сказки Мельпомены". Издал эту книжицу экспромтом от нечего делать, спустя рукава...
I sent one copy to you also for the "Petersburg Gazette," which I ask you kindly to forward to it... I would also like to compose a little advertisement for the "P Gazette," but alas, I have no money to spare... I have friends in Petersburg for whom this advertisement would not be unwelcome: they would read it and send along 75 kopecks apiece; so might you put in a word about the advertisement on credit? On credit and, if possible, with a reduction. You may even pay them out of my own fee. I am utterly ruined and crying for help... If you have no time to bother with my advertisements and if it is inconvenient, then for Christ’s sake don’t stand on ceremony and "spit on it." It is not so terribly important...
Послал я Вам один экземпляр и для "Петербургской газеты", в кою и прошу Вас оный препроводить... Хотелось бы мне и объявленьице сочинить в "П газету", но, увы, денег нет свободных... Есть у меня в Питере приятели, для которых это объявление было бы нелишним: прочли бы и по 75 коп. прислали; посему не походатайствуете ли об объявлении в кредит? В кредит и, по возможности, с уступкой. Уплатить можете Вы им даже из моего гонорара. Совсем я разорился и кричу караул... Если Вам некогда возиться с моими объявлениями и если неудобно, то, ради Христа, не церемоньтесь и "наплюве". Это не бог весть как важно...
Tomorrow I am off for the whole summer to Voskresensk, where, should the need arise, I ask you to address me: "Voskresensk (Moscow province), A. P. Ch." That is the whole address... Send the fee there as well.
Еду завтра на всё лето в Воскресенск, куда в случае надобности и прошу адресоваться: "Воскресенск (Московской губ.), А. П. Ч.". Вот и весь адрес... Сюда же шлите и гонорар.
One more most humble request. In Voskresensk the family lives "on credit," and settling up with the shopkeepers is done on the first of the month. A delay is undesirable to both sides... Arrange, my dear fellow, to send me the fee as early as possible. The money post arrives in Voskresensk only on Mondays and Fridays... The first Monday in July will be the 2nd... So if you send the fee on the 30th of June, you will land right in the very center of it.
Еще одна покорнейшая просьба. В Воскресенске семья живет "на книжку", расплата же с лавочниками производится первого числа. Просрочка нежелательна обеими сторонами... Распорядитесь, голубчик, выслать мне гонорар по возможности раньше. Денежная почта приходит в Воскресенск только по понедельникам и пятницам... Первый июльский понедельник будет 2-го числа... Если, стало быть, Вы вышлете гонорар 30 июня, то Вы попадете в самую центру.
I enclose the advertisement for the "Petersburg Gazette." Print it 5 times, on the 4th page, in the size of the enclosed advertisement, in a little frame...
Объявление для "Петерб газеты" прилагаю. Напечатать 5 раз, на 4-й странице, в размере прилагаемого объявления, в рамочке...
Do not print the advertisement in "Oskolki"... You are cramped enough there as it is, and besides, my little book is not in the spirit of "Oskolki." Let us wait for a collection of humorous stories, should such a thing ever come to be...
В "Осколках" объявление не печатайте... У вас и так тесно, да и книжка моя не в духе "Осколков". Подождем собрания юмористич рассказов, если таковое будет когда-нибудь...
Will you not write and tell me where and how books are sold? I am a complete ignoramus in the book trade. Should I send someone in Petersburg a couple of dozen copies? I have 1200 in all. I am not striving to sell them... If they sell, good; if they don’t, so be it... The edition cost 200 rubles. If that money is lost – to hell with it... More has been squandered on drink and love affairs, so why not squander something on a literary pleasure?
Не напишете ли Вы мне, где и как продают книги? Я совсем профан в книжной коммерции. Не послать ли кому-нибудь в Питер десятка два экземпляров? Всех у меня 1200. Продать не тщусь... Продастся – хорошо, не продастся – так тому и быть... Издание стоит 200 руб. Пропадут эти деньги – плевать... На пропивку и амуры просаживали больше, отчего же не просадить на литературное удовольствие?
Further, in Akim Danilych’s letter (in "The Fermenting of Minds") you inserted the phrase: "And it all came about because of a flock of starlings"... The salt of the letter has fallen flat! The mayor has no idea at all what the riot was about, nor has he any need to belittle his administrative exploits with such trifling causes as starlings... He would never explain a riot by starlings... He needs "agitation"... However, all this is trifling... Just a remark in passing...
Затем Вы в письме Акима Данилыча (в "Брожении умов") вставили фразу: "А всё из-за стаи скворцов вышло"... Соль письма ухнула... Городничему вовсе не известно, из-за чего бунт вышел, да и нет ему надобности умалять свои администраторские подвиги такими ничтожными причинами, как скворцы... Он никогда не объяснит бунта скворцами... Ему нужна "ажитация"... Впрочем, всё это пустяки... Это к слову...
The congratulations on finishing my course, the celebrations, and living in stuffy Moscow have quite upset my bodily harmony... I am weak.
