Ferment of Minds

Брожение умов (из летописи одного города)

Headnote

"Ferment of Minds" ("Брожение умов") appeared in 1884, one of the fast, disposable comic sketches Chekhov produced by the dozen under his early pseudonym Antosha Chekhonte for the humor weeklies. Subtitled "from the chronicle of a certain town," it belongs to the tradition of provincial-farce reportage that Saltykov-Shchedrin had already made a genre in Russian letters: a nothing of a summer afternoon mistaken, by a chain of purely visual misreadings, for a catastrophe.

The mechanism is entirely optical. Two idle townsmen stop to watch a flock of starlings circling toward the archpriest’s cherry trees; a passing priest, a group of pilgrim women, factory hands, a blind beggar’s boy, and finally the town’s entire loafing population fall in behind their upturned gazes, each one certain the others have seen something and none of them having seen anything at all. By the time the police captain Akim Danilych arrives bellowing for firemen and water, the crowd has generated its own momentum — a squashed foot, an arrest, a denunciation of the local press — with no fire, no water, and, crucially, no one left who remembers the starlings that started it.

Chekhov’s target is double: the machinery of small-town rumor, and the machinery of small-town authority that responds to rumor with exactly the same blind excitability it is nominally there to contain. Akim Danilych’s mangled command Russian, and his fawning, wheedling report to a superior at the story’s close — composed the same evening, over cognac, as though the day’s fiasco were a personal triumph of crowd control — turn the sketch, in its last few lines, from farce into something closer to satire of the reporting culture itself: the gap between what happened (nothing) and what gets written down (heroism, near-catastrophe averted by a lady’s prayers) is the story’s real subject.

The narrator keeps strict comic distance throughout — no character is allowed interiority, and the prose itself moves at the pace of gossip, picking up and dropping participants as the crowd does. It is a minor piece, but a clean early specimen of the comic timing and crowd-choreography Chekhov would later put to much darker use.
