Good day to you, my dear fellow. Your telegram about "Thermidor" threw me into confusion. I was seized with a terrible urge to go to Petersburg – not for Sardou’s sake, nor for the Parisians who have arrived, but just so, for no earthly reason. But practical considerations took me by the bridle. I reasoned that I must hurry and write my novella, that I don’t know French and so would be occupying someone else’s seat in the box, that I have little money, and so on. In a word, as it now seems to me, I am a poor comrade, though I appear, on the face of it, to have acted sensibly.

Здравствуйте, голубчик мой. Ваша телеграмма насчет "Тормидора" смутила меня. Меня страшно потянуло в Петербург, но не ради Сарду и приехавших парижан, а так, здорово живешь. Но практические соображения взяли меня под уздцы. Я сообразил, что надо спешить писать повесть, что я не знаю французского языка и поэтому буду занимать в ложе чужое место, что у меня мало денег и проч. Одним словом, как теперь мне кажется, я плохой товарищ, хотя и поступил, по-видимому, умно.

My novella is moving along. Everything smooth, even, almost no longueurs, but you know what’s very bad? There’s no movement in my novella, and this frightens me. I’m afraid it will be hard to read through to the middle, let alone to the end. Be that as it may, I shall finish it all the same. I’ll present Anna Ivanovna with a vellum copy for reading in the bathing-house. I should like something to bite her in the water and for her to come out of the bathing-house sobbing.

Повесть моя подвигается вперед. Всё гладко, ровно, длиннот почти нет, но знаете, что очень скверно? В моей повести нет движения, и это меня пугает. Я боюсь, что ее трудно будет дочитать до середины, не говоря уж о конце. Как бы то ни было, я все-таки кончу ее. Анне Ивановне поднесу веленевый экземпляр для чтения в купальне. Я желал бы, чтобы ее что-нибудь в воде укусило и чтобы она вышла из купальни рыдающей.

I was sad when you left. In general I am sad.

Мне было грустно, когда Вы уезжали. Вообще мне грустно.

The astonishing astronomer-lady has finished French grammar with me and has rolled off to Petersburg for some reason. Kovalevskaya’s laurels give her no peace, and it seems she wants to enroll in the courses.

Изумительная астрономка кончила со мной французскую грамматику и укатила зачем-то в Петербург. Лавры Ковалевской не дают ей спать, и она, кажется, хочет поступить на курсы.

"The Proposal" is not in the Shrovetide repertoire; evidently the actors took offense that I have not yet been to the theater. Yesterday Yuzhin was there again – not accepted. Nemirovich was there – not accepted. Clouds are gathering on my horizon, and I expect a downpour with hail.

"Предложения" нет в масленичном репертуаре; очевидно, актеры обиделись, что до сих пор я не был в театре. Вчера опять был Южин – не приняли. Был Немирович – не приняли. На горизонте моем скопляются тучи, и я жду ливня с градом.

Misha has just arrived from Aleksin. Some job that is! I’d agree to that too. Countess Rochefort has refused us finally. I think that in the happy days of her honeymoon she did not distress her husband with a refusal the way she has just distressed us. Where are we going to live now? I am dreadfully afraid of the gray dacha setup, with its cracks, the stains on the ceiling, and the kitchen fumes, and it looks as though this year too I shall have to taste of it.

Только что приехал Миша из Алексина. Вот так служба! Этак и я бы согласился. Графиня Рошфор отказала нам окончательно. Я думаю, что в счастливые дни медового месяца она не огорчала так мужа своим отказом, как огорчила теперь нас. Где мы теперь будем жить? Я ужасно боюсь серой дачной обстановки со щелями, пятнами на потолке и кухонным чадом, а пожалуй, и в этом году придется вкусить сие.

Send me money. I have none, and there seems to be nowhere to get any. By my reckoning, under favorable conditions I can get from you no more than a thousand rubles by September. Reckon accordingly, but don’t send the money by post, since I cannot bear going to the post office.

Пришлите мне денег. У меня их нет и взять, кажется, неоткуда. По моему расчету, я при благоприятных условиях могу получить от Вас до сентября не более тысячи рублей. Соображайтесь с сим, но не высылайте денег почтой, так как я терпеть не могу ходить в почтамт.
