To N. A. Leikin, 20 August 1886. Babkino.
H. A. Лейкину, 20 августа 1886 г. Бабкино.
Headnote
1 Written from the Kiselyov family estate at Babkino on 20 August 1886, this letter is addressed to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, editor of the comic weekly Oskolki (Fragments), for which Chekhov was a regular contributor. Chekhov reports on the dismal summer weather, his plan to move his family to a new apartment in Moscow’s Kudrino district in early September, and news of mutual acquaintances in the world of comic journalism – including the poet Liodor Palmin and the writer Khudekov. He also comments on Leikin’s own recent stories.
2 The letter is notable for its urgent, half-joking appeal for a 70-ruble advance to cover rent due on the new Moscow apartment, to be sent to Chekhov’s father at his shop in the Teplye Ryady market – a vivid glimpse of the financial pressures the young Chekhov managed while supporting his family and building his literary career. The closing byplay over an extra 8 kopecks for a lengthened story ending shows the piecework economics of magazine writing at the time.
