In the Dark

Headnote

1 "In the Dark" (1886) is a brisk comic anecdote of the kind Chekhov produced by the dozen for the humor papers of the early 1880s. A fly crawling into the nose of a sleeping deputy prosecutor, Gagin, sets off a sneeze that wakes his wife, Marya Mihailovna. From the darkened window she glimpses a shadowy figure climbing into the kitchen and is certain it is a burglar. Her husband, roused with great reluctance, guesses it is only the local fireman paying a nighttime visit to their cook, Pelageya – a matter he regards as unremarkable custom rather than scandal. Sent to investigate anyway, he interrogates the aggrieved cook, fails to find any wrongdoer, and returns to bed, only for a lit candle to reveal that he has absentmindedly put on the fireman’s coat instead of his own dressing gown, reviving his wife’s horror all over again.

2 The story is a small comedy of misperception and marital bickering built almost entirely out of dialogue, a favorite Chekhov mode from this early period. Its humor turns on the gap between Marya Mihailovna’s overheated imagination – axes, pools of blood, ruin – and her husband’s weary, worldly indifference to what he takes to be routine household arrangements between a cook and her soldier-fireman suitor. Pelageya’s brief outburst about the indignities of servant life adds a note of social realism amid the farce, glancing at the era’s casual mistreatment of domestic servants without dwelling on it. The final image, of the greatcoat mistaken in darkness for a dressing gown, neatly closes the story’s running joke about seeing clearly (or not) in the dark.

A fly of middling size crawled into the nose of the deputy prosecutor, Court Councillor Gagin. Whether it was curiosity that drove it, or perhaps it had wandered in through sheer thoughtlessness, or on account of the darkness, the nose in any case could not endure the presence of a foreign body and gave the signal to sneeze. Gagin sneezed, sneezed with feeling, with a piercing whistle, and so loudly that the bed gave a start and let out the sound of a startled spring. Gagin’s wife, Marya Mihailovna, a large, plump blonde, gave a start too, and woke up. She peered into the darkness, sighed, and turned over onto her other side. About five minutes later she turned over once more, shut her eyes more tightly, but sleep would not come back to her. After sighing and tossing from side to side, she raised herself up, climbed over her husband, and, putting on her slippers, went to the window.
Outside it was dark. Only the silhouettes of the trees and the dark roofs of the sheds could be made out. The east had grown the faintest bit paler, but even that pallor was about to be smothered by clouds. In the air, asleep and shrouded in mist, there was silence. Even the dacha watchman, who is paid for disturbing the night’s peace with his rattle, was silent, and so was the corncrake – the one wild bird that does not shun the company of summer residents from the capital.
It was Marya Mihailovna herself who broke the silence. Standing at the window and looking out into the yard, she suddenly cried out. It seemed to her that from the flower bed, where a thin, close-cropped poplar stood, some dark figure was making its way toward the house. At first she thought it was a cow or a horse, but then, rubbing her eyes, she began to make out clearly the outline of a human being.
Then it seemed to her that the dark figure came up to the window that looked out from the kitchen, and, having stood there a little while, evidently in indecision, set one foot on the sill and... vanished into the darkness of the window.
"A thief!" flashed through her mind, and a deathly pallor spread over her face.
And in an instant her imagination painted the very picture that summer residents’ wives so dread: the thief climbs into the kitchen, from the kitchen into the dining room... the silver in the cupboard... then the bedroom... an axe... a brigand’s face... the gold things... Her knees gave way and a cold shiver ran down her spine.
"Vasya!" she began tugging at her husband. "Basile! Vassily Prokofyich! Ah, my God, like a dead man! Wake up, Basile, I beg you!"
"Wh-what?" mumbled the deputy prosecutor, drawing in a breath and making chewing noises.
"Wake up, for heaven’s sake! A thief has got into our kitchen! I was standing at the window, I look, and someone is climbing in through the window! From the kitchen he’ll get into the dining room... the spoons are in the cupboard! Basile! At Mavra Yegorovna’s last year they broke in just the same way."
"Wh... what do you want?"
"My God, he doesn’t hear! Do understand, you blockhead, that I just saw some man climbing into our kitchen! Pelageya will be frightened and... and the silver’s in the cupboard!"
"Nonsense!"
"Basile, this is unbearable! I am telling you of danger, and you sleep and mumble! What is it you want? Do you want us robbed and murdered?"
The deputy prosecutor slowly raised himself and sat up on the bed, filling the air with yawns.
"The devil knows what sort of people you are!" he muttered. "Is there really to be no peace even at night? Waking a man over trifles!"
"But I swear to you, Basile, I saw a man climbing in at the window!"
"Well, what of it? Let him climb in... In all likelihood it’s Pelageya’s fireman come to see her."
"Wh-what? What did you say?"
"I said it’s the fireman come to see Pelageya."
"All the worse!" cried Marya Mihailovna. "That is worse than a thief! I will not tolerate such shamelessness in my house!"
"What virtue, if you please... Won’t tolerate shamelessness... And is that shamelessness, pray? Why fling foreign words about to no purpose? This, my dear, has been the custom since time out of mind, hallowed by tradition. That’s what a fireman is for – to go calling on cooks."
"No, Basile! Then you don’t know me at all! I cannot admit the thought that in my house such a thing – such a thing – should happen! Be so good as to go this instant to the kitchen and order him to clear out! This very instant! And tomorrow I shall tell Pelageya that she is not to dare allow herself such conduct! When I am dead, you may permit such shamelessness in your house, but for now you shall not dare. Kindly go!"
"D-devil take it..." Gagin muttered in vexation. "Now use your womanish, microscopic brain and consider – why should I go there?"
"Basile, I am going to faint!"
Gagin spat, put on his slippers, spat once more, and set off for the kitchen. It was as dark as inside a corked barrel, and the deputy prosecutor had to feel his way along. On the way he groped for the door of the nursery and woke the nurse.
"Vasilisa," he said, "you took my dressing gown this evening to clean. Where is it?"
"I gave it to Pelageya to clean, sir."
"What sort of disorder is this? You take things, but you don’t put them back... Now I suppose I’m to go wandering about without my dressing gown!"
Entering the kitchen, he made his way to the spot where, on the chest under the shelf with the saucepans, the cook lay sleeping.
"Pelageya!" he began, groping for her shoulder and giving it a push. "You! Pelageya! Now then, why pretend? You’re not asleep! Who was it just now climbing in at your window?"
"Hm!... good evening to you! Climbing in at the window! Who’d be climbing in at it?"
"Come now, none of that... there’s no use casting a shadow over it! Tell your scoundrel, rather, to clear off good and proper while he’s still whole. Do you hear? He’s got no business here!"
"Are you out of your mind, sir? Good evening indeed... Found yourself some fool, have you... All day long I slave, running about, never a moment’s peace, and now at night such words. I live on four roubles a month... with my own tea and sugar, and besides these words I get no other respect from anyone... I lived with merchants once, and never saw such shame as this."
"Now, now... no use singing Lazarus at me! This very instant see to it that your soldier isn’t here any longer! Do you hear?"
"Shame on you, sir!" said Pelageya, and tears could be heard in her voice. "You’re educated people... gentlefolk, and yet you haven’t the understanding that maybe, in our grief... in our wretched life..." She began to cry. "One can insult us. There’s no one to stand up for us."
"Now, now... it’s all the same to me! The mistress sent me here. As far as I’m concerned, you could let a house-spirit in at the window for all I care."
The deputy prosecutor had nothing left to do but admit to himself that he had been wrong to conduct this interrogation, and return to his wife.
"Listen, Pelageya," he said, "you took my dressing gown to clean. Where is it?"
"Ah, sir, forgive me, I forgot to put it on the chair for you. It’s hanging by the stove, on the little nail..."
Gagin felt about by the stove for the dressing gown, put it on, and trudged quietly back to the bedroom.
Marya Mihailovna, once her husband had gone, lay down in bed and began to wait. For three minutes she was calm, but after that uneasiness began to torment her.
"How long he’s been gone, though!" she thought. "It’s all very well if it’s that... cynic in there, but what if it’s a thief?"
And once more her imagination painted a picture: her husband walks into the dark kitchen... a blow from the blunt side of an axe... he dies without uttering a single sound... a pool of blood...
Five minutes passed, five and a half, at last six... A cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
"Basile!" she shrieked. "Basile!"
"Well, what are you shouting for? I’m here..." she heard her husband’s voice and his footsteps. "Is someone cutting your throat, or what?"
The deputy prosecutor came up to the bed and sat down on the edge of it.
"There’s no one there," he said. "You imagined it, you funny creature... You may set your mind at rest: your fool of a Pelageya is every bit as virtuous as her mistress. What a coward you are! What a..."
And the deputy prosecutor began teasing his wife. He had thoroughly woken himself up now and no longer felt like sleeping.
"What a coward!" he laughed. "Tomorrow you must go to the doctor and be cured of your hallucinations. You’re a hysteric!"
"There’s a smell of tar..." said his wife. "Tar, or... something of the sort, onions... cabbage soup."
"M-yes... There is something in the air... I don’t feel like sleeping! Tell you what, I’ll light a candle... Where are the matches? And by the way, I’ll show you the photograph of the prosecutor of the judicial chamber. He said goodbye to us yesterday and gave everyone a photograph. With his autograph."
Gagin struck a match against the wall and lit the candle. But before he had taken a step away from the bed to go for the photograph, a piercing, soul-rending scream sounded behind him. Turning round, he saw his wife’s two great eyes fixed upon him, full of astonishment, horror, anger...
"Did you take off your dressing gown in the kitchen?" she asked, turning pale.
"What of it?"
"Look at yourself!"
The deputy prosecutor looked down at himself and gasped. On his shoulders, instead of the dressing gown, hung a fireman’s greatcoat. How had it come to be on his shoulders? While he puzzled over this question, his wife’s imagination was already painting a new picture, a terrible, impossible one: darkness, silence, a whisper, and so on, and so on...
