Headnote

1 Written from Moscow on 10 May 1886 to Chekhov’s elder brother Alexander Pavlovich, shortly after Anton’s return from a two-week stay in Petersburg, where he had grown close to the influential editor and publisher Alexei Suvorin and the novelist Dmitry Grigorovich. Alexander, himself a writer, was contemplating a story titled "The City of the Future," and Anton offers him practical advice on how to write it.

2 The letter is a compact statement of Chekhov’s emerging craft principles: brevity, objectivity, concrete physical detail over generalized scene- painting (the famous broken-bottle-glass example of conveying a moonlit night), restraint in describing characters’ inner states in favor of letting action reveal psychology, and a narrow cast centered on "he and she." Alongside the literary counsel, the letter carries ordinary family business – an address change, news of money sent via their brother Mikhail, and a closing note on the weather – giving a rounded picture of Chekhov as both mentor and elder brother.

If you have not yet given up the idea of writing to me, then write now to this address: "the town of Voskresensk (Moscow province), to Dr. Ant. P."
I have just returned from Petersburg, where I spent two weeks. I passed the time there splendidly. I have never been closer with anyone than I now am with Suvorin and Grigorovich. There are so many details that I cannot convey them in a letter, and so I shall tell them to you when we meet. Do you read "Novoye Vremya"?
"The City of the Future" – a splendid theme, both for its novelty and for its interest. I think that if you don’t grow lazy, you’ll write it up none too badly, but then again, devil knows, what a lazybones you are! "The City of the Future" will turn out to be a work of art only under the following conditions: 1) the absence of long-winded outpourings of a political-social-economic character; 2) thoroughgoing objectivity; 3) truthfulness in the description of the characters and objects; 4) extreme brevity; 5) boldness and originality – flee from the commonplace; 6) heartfeltness.
In my opinion, descriptions of nature ought to be very brief and have the character of the á propos. Commonplaces such as: "The setting sun, bathing in the waves of the darkening sea, poured forth crimson gold," and so on, "The swallows, flying over the surface of the water, twittered merrily" – such commonplaces must be thrown out. In descriptions of nature one must seize on small particulars, grouping them in such a way that when you close your eyes after reading, a picture forms. For instance, you will get a moonlit night if you write that on the mill dam a bit of glass from a broken bottle flashed like a bright little star, and the black shadow of a dog or a wolf rolled by like a ball, and so on. Nature becomes animate if you do not disdain to employ comparisons of her phenomena with human actions, and so on.
In the sphere of the psyche, likewise, particulars. God preserve you from commonplaces. Best of all is to avoid describing the mental state of the characters; one must strive to make it comprehensible from the actions of the characters... There’s no need to chase after an abundance of characters. The center of gravity ought to be two: he and she...
I write this to you as a reader who has a definite taste. I write it also so that you, in writing, should not feel yourself alone. Solitude in creative work is a hard thing. Better a bad critic than nothing at all... Is that not so?
Send me the beginning of your tale... I shall read it the day I receive it and return it to you with my opinion the very next day. Don’t hurry to finish it, for before the middle of September not a single Petersburg person will read your manuscript – some being abroad, others at their dacha...
I am glad that you have taken up serious work. A man of thirty must be positive and have character. I am still a fop, and it is forgivable in me to dabble in trifles. All the same, with the five stories placed in "Novoye Vremya," I have raised such an uproar in Petersburg that I have gone quite giddy from it, as from fumes.
The fee from "Sverchok" and "Bud" has been sent to you by Mishka in two installments.
And with that, be well and do not forget your
