For Husbands' Information

Headnote

1 For Husbands’ Information (K svedeniyu muzhey), subtitled “A Scientific Article,” appeared in 1885, during Chekhov’s prolific years writing for Oskolki (Splinters) and the other Petersburg and Moscow humor weeklies under the pseudonym “Antosha Chekhonte.” It takes the form of a mock taxonomy – the deadpan, pseudo-academic register was a favorite device of Chekhov’s Oskolki period – cataloguing the methods by which a man might seduce another man’s wife, from the crude and the opportunistic to a final, elaborately staged “subtle method” that the piece walks through step by step, dialogue and all, as a worked example. The satire is aimed in both directions at once: at the vain, gullible husbands who cannot resist repeating a stranger’s flattery of their own wives, at the wives whose heads are turned by praise relayed secondhand, and, not least, at the seducer-narrator himself, whose confiding, expert tone – lecturing the reader as a fellow practitioner – is the engine of the joke.

The piece is frankly cynical about marital fidelity and openly instructs in seduction and manipulation, treating both the pursued wives and the husbands who unwittingly assist their own cuckolding as objects of ridicule; this reflects the boulevard-humor conventions of the venue and period rather than any claim to editorial endorsement, and Hermitsh Press translates it in full, without softening, per house policy on the early satirical work. The source also employs its own explanatory footnote for a Latin tag (aqua cavat lapidem non vi, sed saepe cadendo), a convention preserved in this translation. No ethnic slurs or other offensive language directed at a national, racial, or religious group appear in the source.

FOR HUSBANDS’ INFORMATION

(A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE)

As human thought has progressed, methods for the conquest of other men’s wives have been worked out alongside every other pressing question of the age. These methods may serve as an excellent measure of human development. The finer and more graceful the method, the more perfect the man – and vice versa. Leaving aside the methods employed by Australian savages and by the Moscow merchant class, all the methods now in use can readily be brought under a few definite types.
The most common and most widely used is the old method, familiar to virtuous people from novels. Here the leading features are a languid expression of face, a mysteriously burning gaze, escorting the lady about, “understanding one another without words,” sitting for hours together on the sofa, romances, little notes, and the rest of the rigmarole. The wife “tolerates” her admirer at her side, laughs at him together with her husband, but the moment the husband is away – look sharp, cicisbeo! – the lady “fatally” falls, and begs that no one be told. This method is much loved and encouraged by ladies of twenty-six to thirty-five. It is easy, and is therefore most often practiced by uninventive people, the young, and the poor in spirit. It is in great vogue among junior land-surveying officials, minor railway men, and retired cadets.
The method of cousins. Here infidelity is unpremeditated. It comes about without preliminaries, without preparation, but by accident, of itself, somewhere at a dacha or in a carriage, under the influence of imprudently drunk champagne or a wonderful moonlit night.
The method according to the theory of the beggar brotherhood: ask, and it shall be given unto you. Without troubling to find out whether you please her or not, you begin from the very first move to cling to her like a bathhouse leaf, like a burr... You do not leave her side by so much as a step, and in this respect you rival her own shadow: she from you, you after her... Compliments, courtesies, declarations of love – these are your speech. You beg, you swear oaths, you promise to shoot yourself... You are laughed in the face, pushed away, despised, threatened with the husband’s anger, but nonetheless you press boldly on. Seizing a convenient moment, you fall on your knees, press your lips to her hand... She flares up, spits, strikes you across the cheek, but you do not retreat... Like a true beggar, you go on holding her fur coat for her, waiting on her at supper, gazing beseechingly into her eyes... At last you are rudely refused the house. But even this is no misfortune. You still have in reserve a bombardment of letters and the sending of go-betweens. And besides, wherever she may be outside the house, she sees you everywhere: at the theater, at the races, in society... “Spare a little alms!” your eyes implore her. And so on. Half a year passes, a year... and the rock begins to move. In the end either they grow used to you, or they give you your alms simply to be rid of you... Above all, one must remember that aqua cavat lapidem non vi, sed saepe cadendo...a drop wears away the stone not by force, but by falling often (Latin).
The stunning method, in which you take the wife by storm, come what may, sparing neither boldness nor insolence. Here you act on the spur of the moment, headlong, and... if you do not go flying out of a third-story window, or break your neck tumbling down a steep staircase, then you may be congratulated on complete success. Women in general are not opposed to stunning moments.
The method \`a la Count Nulin, frequently practiced by traveling lieutenants and lawyers on their way to a session of the justices of the peace. Out of 100 cases only 5 fail, and even those for reasons beyond the editors’ control.
The subtle method. The cleverest, the most cunning, and the most dangerous for husbands. It is understood only by psychologists and connoisseurs of the female heart. By this method, in conquering someone’s wife, you keep yourself as far from her as possible. Having felt an attraction to her, a sort of ailment, you cease calling on her, you meet her as seldom as possible, only in passing... Here you act at a distance. The whole matter lies in a kind of hypnotizing.
She must not see you, but she must feel you, as a rabbit feels the gaze of a boa constrictor. You hypnotize her not with your look but with the venom of your tongue, and the very best transmitting wire for this purpose may be the husband himself...
So: you meet the husband somewhere, at the club or at the theater...
“And how is your wife getting on?” you ask him, in passing. “Most charming woman! I like her tremendously! That is, devil knows how much I like her!”
“Hm... And just what is it about her that you like so much?” asks the gratified husband.
“And you still ask?! The most exquisite, poetic creature... Though you husbands are prosaic sorts, you don’t understand!... Understand that this is an ideal woman! I rejoice for you! It’s just such women that are needed in our time... precisely such! A beauty, full of life and truth, sincere and at the same time mysterious... Such women, once they fall in love, love strongly, with their whole ardor... and so on....”
That very same day, going to bed, the husband cannot help but say to his wife:
“I saw Pyotr Ivanovich today... He praised you no end. A beauty, he says, and mysterious... and supposedly you’re capable of loving in some particular way... He spun quite a yarn... Ha-ha...”
A little while later you again contrive to meet the husband.
“By the way, my dear fellow...” you say to him. “A painter called on me yesterday... He’s received a commission from some prince: to paint, for 2,000 rubles, the head of a typically Russian beauty. He asked me to find him a model. I thought of sending him to your wife, but felt too embarrassed... And your wife would suit perfectly. Such a charming head!”
A husband would have to be exceedingly disobliging not to pass this along to his wife. In the morning the wife gazes long into the mirror and thinks:
“Wherever did he get the idea that my face is purely Russian?!”
After this, whenever she looks in the mirror, she thinks of you every time. Meanwhile your chance meetings with her husband continue. After one such meeting the husband comes home and begins peering into his wife’s face.
“What are you staring at?” she asks.
“Oh, that crank, Pyotr Ivanovich, thought that one of your eyes is darker than the other. I can’t see it myself, hang me if I can!”
The wife is back at the mirror.
“Saw Pyotr Ivanovich at the theater,” says the husband, after the eighth or ninth meeting. “He asks to be excused for not being able to call on you: no time! What a crank, honestly! He pestered me like a knife at my throat: ‘Why doesn’t your wife go on the stage? With such looks, he says, with such development and such feeling, it’s a sin to sit at home!’ Ha-ha... Taken with you, isn’t he! ‘If I weren’t so busy,’ he says, ‘I’d steal her away from you...’ Well, go ahead, I say, steal away... ‘You,’ he says, ‘don’t understand her! One must understand her! Hers,’ he says, ‘is no common nature – it’s seeking an outlet!’ Ha-ha... Well, I think, let him live with her a while, he’d sing a different tune...”
And little by little the poor wife is seized by a passionate thirst to meet you. You are the one person who has understood her, and only to you can she tell so much... so very much! But you stubbornly do not come, and do not let yourself be seen. She has not seen you in a long while, but your agonizingly sweet poison has already infected her. The husband, yawning, relays your words to her, and it seems to her that she hears you, sees the gleam of your eyes...
The time comes to seize the moment. One evening the husband comes home and says to his wife:
“Just now I met Pyotr Ivanovich... Such a gloomy fellow... Complains that melancholy has got the better of him. ‘Out of melancholy,’ he says, ‘I don’t even go home, I walk the whole night along N. Boulevard...’ What a crank!”
The wife is all afire... She would passionately like to go to N. Boulevard and steal even one glance at the man who managed to understand her so well and who is now, for some reason, in anguish. Who knows? Were she to speak with him now, to say a word or two of comfort to him, perhaps he would cease to suffer...
“But this is wild... impossible,” she thinks.
Having waited for her husband to fall asleep, she raises her feverish head, presses a finger to her lips, and thinks. What if she should risk going out of the house now? Afterward she can lie about something, say that she had run to the chemist’s, to the dentist...
“I’ll go!” she decides.
Her plan is already made: to the boulevard by cab; on the boulevard she will walk past him, glance at him, and – back home... By this she will compromise neither herself nor her husband... And she dresses, steals out of the house, and hurries to the boulevard. On the boulevard it is dark, deserted... But now she sees someone’s silhouette. It must be he... Trembling in every limb, she slowly approaches you... you walk toward her... For a minute you stand in silence and look into each other’s eyes... Another minute passes
