The Summer Girl

Дачница

Headnote

“The Summer Girl” (Дачница) appeared in 1884, one of the rapid stream of comic sketches the twenty-four-year-old Chekhov produced under his early pseudonyms while training as a physician – the Antosha Chekhonte years, when a piece like this one might be written, submitted, and set in type within days. It belongs to that first gear: fast, broad, built on a single premise and worked out to its punchline with a humoresque’s economy.

The premise is a portrait in two halves. Lyolya, a young bride not a year out of her institute for young ladies, stands at dusk by the dacha fence, sighing over the gap between the man she imagined marrying and the man she got. The institute section is Chekhov’s satire of a certain overheated, novel-fed romanticism – girls raised on Turgenev and swooning at the mere sight of a mustache – and it sets up the fall that follows: not a villain, not a tragedy, just a husband who is prosperous, presentable, and staggeringly dull. His day is itemized with mock-ceremonial precision – the shave performed “as though he were inventing the telephone,” the waters drunk with a preoccupied face, the two hours of terrace-bound thought that leave him no wiser than before – because Chekhov’s joke is procedural: absurdity disclosed through routine, not through incident.

Watch for the running gag of authority without substance. The husband never reads a book or a newspaper, confuses one novelist for another, and is nonetheless deferred to at his own dinner table as an oracle on England, Bismarck, actors, and the younger generation. Chekhov does not comment on this; he simply lets the dinner guests nod. The story’s closing move is characteristic of the mature Chekhov already latent in the young one: no resolution, no verdict, just Lyolya’s flat, quiet arithmetic that he is better than the other men she knows – and that this does not help her at all.
