The Captain's Uniform

Капитанский мундир

Headnote

"The Captain’s Uniform" appeared in 1884, among the run of short comic pieces Chekhov turned out at speed for the Moscow humor weeklies during his medical-student and early-career years. The story turns on a household’s frantic, ultimately absurd deference to rank and appearance – a captain’s old dress uniform, kept as a relic, becomes the occasion for a small domestic comedy of manners and misplaced solemnity.

As in much of Chekhov’s apprentice fiction, the humor works by taking a trivial object – a coat, a title, a form of address – and following the characters’ anxious overreactions to it out to their logical, ridiculous end, glancing along the way at the Table of Ranks and the reflexive status-consciousness of provincial Russian life.
