Early Christian priest of Alexandria (c. 256-336) whose teaching that the Son was not co-eternal with the Father was condemned as heresy at the Council of Nicaea; Orthodox tradition holds he died a sudden, gruesome death as divine punishment for his pride, a story invoked here by the deacon as a warning to the boastful tailor.
