1 A passenger train pulls out of
Bologoye station on the Nikolayevsky railway line. In one of the second-class "smoking" carriages, wrapped in the dimness of the compartment, some five passengers are dozing. They have just had a bite to eat and now, huddled against the backs of the seats, are trying to fall asleep. Silence.
2 The door opens, and into the carriage steps a tall, stick-like figure in a reddish hat and a dandyish overcoat, strongly resembling the correspondents one sees in operettas and in
Jules Verne novels.
3 The figure stops in the middle of the carriage, sniffs, and peers long and squinting at the seats.
4 "No, this isn’t the one either!" it mutters. "The devil only knows what’s going on! It’s simply outrageous! No, not this one!"
5 One of the passengers peers at the figure and lets out a joyful cry:
7 The stick-like Ivan Alekseyevich gives a start, stares dully at the passenger, and, recognizing him, throws up his hands in delight.
8 "Ah!
Pyotr Petrovich!" he says. "How many winters, how many years! And I had no idea you were on this train."
9 "Alive and well, are you?"
10 "Well enough, only, my good man, I’ve lost my carriage and can’t for the life of me find it again – what an idiot I am! Someone ought to give me a good thrashing!"
11 The stick-like Ivan Alekseyevich sways and giggles.
12 "The things that happen!" he goes on. "After the second bell I stepped out to have a glass of
cognac. Had one, naturally. Then I thought, since the next station’s still a good way off, why not have a second glass too. While I was thinking it over and drinking, the
third bell went – and I, like a madman, went running and jumped into the first carriage I came to. Well, am I not an idiot? Am I not a son of a hen?"
13 "You seem to be in high spirits," says Pyotr Petrovich. "Sit down with us! Honored to have you!"
14 "No, no... I’ll go and look for my own carriage! Farewell!"
15 "In the dark you’re liable to fall off the platform, God forbid. Sit down, and when we come to the station you can find your carriage then. Sit down!"
16 Ivan Alekseyevich sighs and sits down uncertainly across from Pyotr Petrovich. He is visibly agitated, and fidgets as if sitting on pins.
17 "Where are you off to?" asks Pyotr Petrovich.
18 "Me? Into the blue yonder. There’s such a
Tower of Babel going on in my head that I don’t even know myself where I’m going. Fate is carrying me along, so along I go. Ha-ha... My dear fellow, have you ever seen a happy fool? No? Well then, behold! Before you stands the happiest of mortals! Yes indeed! Doesn’t it show on my face?"
19 "Well, it does show that you’re... a bit, you know."
20 "I must have a terribly stupid face on me just now! Ah, what a pity there’s no mirror, I’d love to have a look at my own mug! I can feel, my good man, that I’m turning into an idiot. Word of honor! Ha-ha... I am, if you can imagine it, on my honeymoon journey. Well, am I not a son of a hen?"
21 "You? You mean you’ve married?"
22 "This very day, my dear fellow! Married and straight onto the train."
23 Congratulations begin, and the usual questions.
24 "Well I never..." laughs Pyotr Petrovich. "So that’s why you’re dressed up like such a dandy."
25 "Yes indeed... For the full effect I even splashed on some perfume. I’m up to my ears in the whole business! Not a care, not a thought in my head, only some sort of feeling of...
the devil knows what to call it... contentment, perhaps? Never in my life have I felt so wonderful!"
26 Ivan Alekseyevich closes his eyes and shakes his head.
27 "Outrageously happy!" he says. "Judge for yourselves. In a moment I’ll go back to my own carriage. There, on the little seat by the window, sits a creature who, so to speak, is devoted to you with her whole being. Such a little blonde, with a little nose... little fingers... My darling! My angel! My precious little puffball!
Phylloxera of my soul! And what a foot! Good Lord! Not like our great clodhopping feet, but something so miniature, so magical... so allegorical! You’d want to just pick it up and eat it! Ah, but you don’t understand any of this! You’re all materialists, you go in for analysis and this and that! Dry old
bachelors, and nothing more! Just wait till you marry, then you’ll remember! Where is he now, you’ll say, that Ivan Alekseyevich? Yes, well, so I’ll go now to my own carriage. There they’re waiting for me impatiently... anticipating my arrival. A smile to greet me. I sit down beside her and, just so, take her little chin between two fingers..."
28 Ivan Alekseyevich shakes his head and dissolves into happy laughter.
29 "Then you lay your head on her little shoulder and put your arm around her waist. All around, you understand, is silence... a poetic half-dark. You could embrace the whole world in such a moment. Pyotr Petrovich, allow me to embrace you!"
30 "By all means."
31 The two friends embrace to the good-natured laughter of the passengers, and the happy bridegroom continues:
32 "And for still greater idiocy, or, as they say in novels, for still greater illusion, you go to the buffet and toss back two or three little glasses. Then something starts happening in your head and your chest that you couldn’t read about even in fairy tales. I’m a small man, an insignificant one, and yet it seems to me I have no limits at all... I could take the whole world in my arms!"
33 The passengers, watching the tipsy, happy bridegroom, are infected by his merriment and no longer feel drowsy. Instead of one listener, Ivan Alekseyevich soon has five gathered around him. He fidgets as if on pins, sputters, waves his arms, and chatters without pause. He laughs, and everyone laughs.
34 "The main thing, gentlemen, is to think as little as possible! To the devil with all this analyzing... You feel like a drink, well then drink, and there’s no need to go philosophizing about whether it’s harmful or good... All this philosophy and psychology, to the devil with it!"
35 The conductor passes through the carriage.
36 "My good man," the bridegroom addresses him, "when you pass through carriage No. 209, find
the lady there in the gray hat with the white bird, and tell her I’m here!"
37 "Very good, sir. Only there’s no 209 on this train. There’s 219!"
38 "Well then, 219! No matter! Just tell that lady this: your husband is alive and well!"
39 Ivan Alekseyevich suddenly clutches his head and groans:
40 "Husband... Lady... Since when has this been? Husband... Ha-ha... Someone ought to thrash you, and here you are – a husband! Ah, you idiot! But she! Only yesterday she was a little girl... a little chit of a thing... I simply can’t believe it!"
41 "These days it’s somehow strange even to see a happy man," says one of the passengers. "Sooner see a white elephant."
42 "Yes, and whose fault is that?" says Ivan Alekseyevich, stretching out his long legs with their very pointed toes. "If you’re not happy, then it’s your own fault! Yes indeed, what did you think? Man is the creator of his own happiness. Want it, and you’ll be happy, but you don’t want to. You stubbornly turn away from happiness!"
43 "Well, would you look at that! And how’s that supposed to work?"
44 "Very simple!... Nature has decreed that a man, at a certain period of his life, should love. That period arrives, so love with all your might, but no, you won’t listen to nature, you keep waiting for something. Further... The law states that a normal individual must enter into marriage... Without marriage there’s no happiness. The favorable moment arrives, so marry, no need to dawdle... But no, you won’t marry, you keep waiting for something! And then again, it is written that wine gladdens the heart of man... If you’re feeling good and want to feel even better, then it follows you should go to the buffet and drink. The main thing is – don’t overthink it, just follow the pattern! The pattern is a great thing!"
45 "You say man is the creator of his own happiness. What sort of creator is he, if all it takes is a bad tooth or a spiteful mother-in-law to send his happiness flying head over heels? Everything depends on chance. Let
a Kukuevka-style disaster happen to us right now, and you’d be singing a different tune..."
46 "Nonsense!" protests the bridegroom. "Disasters happen only once a year. I’m not afraid of any such chances, because there’s no occasion for such chances to occur. Chances are rare! To the devil with them! I don’t even want to talk about them! Well, it seems we’re coming up to a way station."
47 "Where are you headed now?" asks Pyotr Petrovich. "
Moscow, or somewhere further south?"
48 "Now really! How could I, traveling north, end up somewhere further south?"
49 "But Moscow isn’t in the north."
51 "We’re going to Moscow, have mercy!"
52 "What do you mean, to Moscow?" the bridegroom marvels.
53 "Strange... Where did you buy your ticket for?"
54 "For Petersburg."
55 "In that case, congratulations. You’ve gotten on the wrong train."
56 Half a minute of silence passes. The bridegroom rises and looks blankly around at the company.
57 "Yes, yes," Pyotr Petrovich explains. "Back at Bologoye you jumped onto the wrong train... It seems that after your cognac you managed to board the oncoming train instead."
58 Ivan Alekseyevich goes pale, clutches his head, and begins pacing rapidly up and down the carriage.
59 "Ah, what an idiot I am!" he rages. "Ah, I’m a scoundrel, may the devils take me! Well, what am I going to do now? My wife’s on that other train! She’s there alone, waiting, pining! Ah, I’m a clown, a fool!"
60 The bridegroom drops onto the seat and squirms as though someone had stepped on a corn of his.
61 "What a wretched man I am!" he groans. "What am I going to do? What?"
62 "Now, now..." the passengers try to console him. "It’s nothing... Send your wife a telegram, and try to catch an express train along the way. That way you’ll overtake her."
63 "An express train!" weeps the bridegroom, "creator of his own happiness." "And where am I supposed to get the money for an express train? All my money’s with my wife!"
64 After whispering among themselves, the laughing passengers take up a collection and supply the lucky man with money.
