2 "I cannot abide it," he mutters, "when girls forget themselves so far as to lose all sense of modesty. In these ramblings about the garden, along the dark little avenues, I see nothing but immorality and looseness. You’re her mother, and you see nothing... But then, by your reckoning it’s all as it should be, that a girl should occupy herself with such foolishness... By your reckoning it’s nothing at all if they start in on their love-making there... You yourself, in your old age, would be glad enough, forgetting all shame, to go galloping off to a rendezvous..."
3 "Now what have you got against me?" the old woman flares up. "Grumbling, and doesn’t even know what about. You bald old scarecrow!"
4 "Well? Have it your way, then... Let them kiss, let them embrace... Very well... let them... It won’t be I who answers before God if the girl’s head gets turned... Kiss away, my dears! Go a-courting!"
5 "Wait a while before you gloat... Perhaps nothing will come of it at all..."
6 "God grant nothing comes of it..." sighs Alexei Borisych.
7 "You’ve always been an enemy to your own flesh and blood... You never wished Lidochka anything but harm... Mind, Alexei, that God doesn’t punish you for your cruelty! I fear for you! There isn’t much time left to live, after all!"
8 "Have it as you like, but this I cannot allow... He’s no match for her, and she’s in no hurry either... Judging by our position and her looks, she’ll have suitors of a far better sort yet... But then, why am I talking to you at all? Much use talking to you! Send him packing, and lock Lidka up – that’s all there is to it... So I shall do."
9 The old man speaks listlessly, yawning, as though chewing on india-rubber; it is plain he grumbles only because something gnaws under his spoon-bone and his tongue has no bones of its own, but the old woman takes every word of his to heart. She throws up her hands, snaps back at him, and clucks like a hen. Tyrant, monster, Mahomet, idol, and other choice words known to her leap straight from her tongue into Alexei Borisych’s "mug"... The matter would have ended, as always, in a resounding spit and tears, but just then the old couple suddenly see something extraordinary: their daughter Lidochka, her hair in disarray, comes flying down the avenue toward the house. At the same moment, far off at the bend in the avenue,
Fyodor Petrovich’s straw hat appears from behind the bushes... This time the young man is strikingly pale. He takes two hesitant steps forward, then waves his hand and strides quickly back the other way. A moment later Lidochka can be heard running into the house, flying through all the corridors, and locking herself with a bang in her room.
10 The old man and the old woman exchange glances of dull astonishment, drop their eyes, and turn a little pale. Both are silent and do not know what to say. The meaning of the riddle is as plain to them as the light of God. Both understand and feel, without a word, that just now, while they sat here grumbling and snapping at one another, their little girl’s fate was being decided. It takes no more than the most ordinary human instinct, to say nothing of a parent’s heart, to grasp what moments Lidochka is now living through, shut up alone in her room, and what an important, fateful part is being played in her life by that receding straw hat...
11 Alexei Borisych rises with a grunt and begins pacing about the room... The old woman follows his movements and waits, her heart in her mouth, for him to speak.
12 "What strange weather we’ve been having these days..." the old man brings out at last. "Cold at night, unbearable heat by day."
13 The cook brings in the
samovar. Marfa Afanasyevna washes the cups and pours the tea, but no one touches it.
14 "We ought to... call
Lida... to tea..." mutters Alexei Borisych, "or else we’ll have to set out a special samovar for her later... I can’t abide disorder!"
15 Marfa Afanasyevna wants to say something and cannot... Her lips tremble, her tongue will not obey her, and her eyes cloud over with a mist. One more moment and – she is crying. Alexei Borisych passionately wants to comfort the poor bewildered old woman, and would not himself be averse to a good cry, but pride stands in the way: he must keep up his character.
16 "All this is well and splendid," he grumbles, "only he ought to have spoken with us first... Yes... First, properly speaking, he ought to have come and asked us for Lidochka’s hand... We might not even have consented!"
17 The old woman waves both hands, sobs loudly, and goes off to her own room.
18 "This is a serious step..." thinks Alexei Borisych. "One can’t decide such a thing carelessly... it must be done seriously, from every side... I’ll go and question her, find out how things stand, talk it over, and decide. It can’t be done this way!"
19 The old man draws his dressing-gown about him and trots off, small steps and all, to Lidochka’s door.
20 "Lidochka!" he says, taking hold of the door handle without much resolution. "Are you... that is... Are you ill, or what?"
21 There is no answer. Alexei Borisych sighs, shrugs his shoulders for no particular reason, and steps back from the door.
22 "This can’t be done this way!" he thinks, shuffling his slippers along the corridors. "One must consider it from every side... think it over, talk it through, discuss it...
Marriage is a sacrament of such a kind that one cannot approach it lightly... I’ll go and talk it over with the old woman..."
23 The old man trots off to his wife’s room. Marfa Afanasyevna stands before an open trunk, sorting through the linen with trembling hands.
24 "There isn’t a single chemise to be had..." she mutters. "Good parents, the proper sort, give even the children’s linen as part of the dowry, but we haven’t so much as a handkerchief or a towel put by... One might think she wasn’t our own daughter at all, but some orphan..."
25 "Here we ought to be talking of something serious, and you go on about rags... It’s shameful even to watch you... A question of life itself is being decided here, and she stands there like some merchant’s wife before her trunk, counting up rags... This can’t be done this way!"
26 "Then how ought it to be done?"
27 "One must think it over, discuss it from every side... talk it through..."
28 The old couple hear Lidochka unlock her door, send a letter to Fyodor Petrovich by the maid, and lock herself in again...
29 "She’s sending him her final answer..." whispers Alexei Borisych. "What foolish creatures, God forgive them! Not enough sense to think of consulting their elders! Well, that’s the younger generation for you!"
30 "And do you know what I just remembered,
Alyosha!" the old woman throws up her hands. "Why, we’ll have to go looking for a new flat in town! If Lidochka isn’t going to be living with us, what use will we have for eight rooms?"
31 "All that’s nonsense... foolishness... Now is the time to speak of serious matters..."
32 Right up until supper the old couple flit about the rooms like shadows, unable to settle anywhere. Marfa Afanasyevna rummages through the linen to no purpose, whispers with
the cook, and keeps breaking into sobs, while Alexei Borisych grumbles, wants to speak of serious matters, and talks nothing but nonsense. Lidochka appears for supper. Her face is pink and her eyes are a little swollen...
33 "Ah, here’s our young lady!" says the old man, not looking at her.
34 They sit down to eat, and the first two courses are eaten in silence... In the faces, in the movements, in the very gait of the servants – in everything there is a hint of some shy solemnity...
35 "We ought to, Lidochka, that is..." the old man begins, "discuss it seriously... from every side... Yes indeed... Shall we have some of the cordial?
Glafira, bring the cordial here! A little champagne wouldn’t have gone amiss, but since there’s none to be had, never mind... Yes indeed... this can’t be done this way!"
36 The cordial is brought. The old man drinks glass after glass...
37 "Come, let us discuss it..." he says. "It’s a serious matter, a matter of life itself... This can’t be done this way!"
38 "Goodness,
papa, how you do love to talk on and on!" sighs Lidochka.
39 "Now, now..." the old man says, taking fright. "I only meant it in a manner of speaking... pour se lepetan... Don’t be cross..."
40 After supper the mother whispers for a long while with her daughter.
41 "And no doubt they’re talking of trifles," thinks the old man, pacing through the rooms. "They don’t understand, foolish girls, how serious... how important this is... This can’t be done, it’s impossible!"
42 Night falls... Lidochka lies in her room and does not sleep... Nor do the old couple sleep, whispering together until the very break of dawn.
43 "The flies won’t let a body sleep!" grumbles Alexei Borisych. But it is not the flies that are to blame, but happiness...
