Bologoye sits almost exactly halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Nikolaevsky Railway; because trains running in both directions could be standing at or passing through the station close together, a drunk and hurried passenger could plausibly board the wrong one, as Ivan Alekseyevich does here.
