Murder Will Out (You Can't Hide an Awl in a Sack)

Headnote

1 Shilo v meshke (literally "An Awl in a Sack," an idiom close to the English "murder will out" – meaning some wrongdoing cannot stay hidden) follows Pyotr Pavlovich Posudin, a provincial official, traveling incognito by hired coach to investigate reports of corruption in a district town.

2 The entire story is one long monologue: his driver, not recognizing his passenger as anyone requiring discretion, chats away about the very official whose secret arrival he is unknowingly escorting – his bribes never taken, his heavy drinking, his mistresses, his absurd and easily-seen-through disguises when he tries to travel unnoticed. Chekhov builds the comedy entirely through dramatic irony: every flattering claim the driver makes collapses a moment later into gossip that humiliates the very man riding beside him, until Posudin, undone by his own reputation, orders the coach turned back before he ever reaches town. It is a compact satire of provincial surveillance and the impossibility of secrecy in a small community where everyone already knows everything.

MURDER WILL OUT
By hired troika, along back roads, observing the strictest incognito, Pyotr Pavlovich Posudin was hurrying to the wretched little district town of N., summoned there by an anonymous letter he had received.
"I’ll catch them... Like snow on their heads... – he dreamed, burying his face in his collar. – They’ve made a filthy mess of things, the scoundrels, and no doubt they’re gloating, imagining they’ve hidden all the loose ends... Ha-ha... I can just picture their horror and astonishment when, in the midst of their triumph, they hear: "Fetch me Tyapkin-Lyapkin!" That’ll cause a stir! Ha-ha..."
Having dreamed his fill, Posudin fell into conversation with his driver. Being a man who hungered for popularity, he began, naturally, by asking about himself:
– Do you know Posudin?
– How could I not! – the driver smirked. – We know him, all right!
– What are you laughing at?
– It’s a wonder! You know every last pen-pusher, and not know Posudin! That’s exactly what he’s set here for – so everybody knows him.
– That’s so... Well, what? What do you think of him? Is he good?
– Not bad... – the driver yawned. – A fine gentleman, knows his business... Not two years yet since they sent him here, and already he’s done things.
– What exactly has he done that’s so special?
– He’s done a lot of good, God grant him health. Got the railway pushed through, threw Khokhryukov out of our district... There was no end to that Khokhryukov... A crook, a swindler, all the old crowd backed him, but Posudin came – and Khokhryukov went to the devil, as if he’d never been... There, brother! You can’t bribe Posudin, no, sir! Give him a hundred, give him a thousand, he won’t take a sin like that on his soul... No, sir!
"Thank God, at least on this score they’ve understood me, – Posudin thought, exulting. – That’s good."
– An educated gentleman... – the driver went on, – not proud... Our folk went to complain to him, and he was just like with the gentry: shook everyone’s hand, "please, sit down"... Hot-tempered like that, quick... He won’t say a word to you straight, it’s all snap! snap! You’d never catch him walking slow, God forbid, no, he’s always at a run, always at a run! Our folk hadn’t hardly gotten a word out before he was: "Horses!!" – and straight off... Arrived and settled everything... didn’t take a kopeck. Ever so much better than the last one! Of course, the last one was good too. Fine-looking, important, nobody in the whole province shouted louder than him... You’d hear him coming ten versts off; but if it’s a matter of outward show, or of internal affairs, the present one is far more clever! The present one’s got a hundred times more brains in that head of his... Only one trouble though... A good man in every way, but there’s one misfortune: he drinks!
"Well, isn’t that a fine thing!" – thought Posudin.
– And how do you know, – he asked, – that I... that he drinks?
– Well, of course, your honor, I haven’t seen him drunk myself, I won’t lie, but people say so. And people haven’t seen him drunk either, but that’s the reputation that follows him... In public, or if he goes visiting somewhere, to a ball, say, or into society, he never drinks. At home he pours it down... Gets up in the morning, rubs his eyes, and the first thing – vodka! The valet brings him a glass, and he’s already asking for another... So he swills it down the whole blessed day. And mind you: he drinks, and never a glassy eye on him! So he must know how to hold himself. Now our Khokhryukov, when he’d go on a bender, it wasn’t just people, even the dogs would howl. But Posudin – you wouldn’t even see his nose go red! He locks himself in his study and laps it up... So people won’t notice, he’s had a little drawer fixed up in his desk, with a little tube. There’s always vodka in that drawer... You bend down to the tube, take a suck, and you’re drunk... In his carriage too, in his briefcase...
"How do they know that? – Posudin was horrified. – My God, even that’s known! What filth..."
– And then too, about the female sex... A rogue! (the driver laughed and shook his head). Nothing but disgrace! He’s got a good ten of those... flibbertigibbets... Two of them live right in his house. One of them, this Nastasya Ivanovna, is like his housekeeper, so to speak, the other – what’s her name, devil take it? – Lyudmila Semyonovna, sort of like a clerk. Nastasya’s the chief one of all. Whatever she wants, he does... Twists him round like a fox with its tail. She’s been given great power. And they’re not as afraid of him as they are of her... Ha-ha... And there’s a third little minx lives on Nachalnaya Street... Shameful!
"He even knows them by name, – Posudin thought, flushing. – And who knows it? A peasant, a coachman... who’s never even been to town!... What filth... what nastiness... what vulgarity!"
– And where do you learn all this? – he asked in an irritated voice.
– People say so... I haven’t seen it myself, but I’ve heard it from folk. And is it really so hard to find out? You can’t cut out a valet’s or a coachman’s tongue... And I daresay Nastasya herself goes round every back street bragging about her woman’s good fortune. You can’t hide from people’s eyes... And then too this Posudin’s taken to going off to his inquiries on the quiet... The last one, whenever he wanted to go anywhere, he’d give notice a month ahead, and when he went, such a racket, such thunder, such ringing of bells, Lord preserve us! Riders galloping ahead of him, riders galloping behind him, riders galloping at his sides. He’d arrive at the place, sleep it off, eat his fill, drink his fill, and then set to bawling out his official business at the top of his lungs. He’d tear his throat, stamp his feet, sleep it off again, and go back the same way... But the present one, soon as he hears something, he tries to slip off quietly, fast, so nobody sees or knows... What a performance! He slips out of the house unnoticed, so the officials won’t see him, and onto the train... He rides to whatever station he needs and, instead of post-horses or something respectable, he tries to hire a peasant’s cart. Wraps himself up all over like a woman, and the whole way wheezes like an old dog, so his voice won’t be recognized. You’ll split your sides laughing when people tell it... Off he goes, the fool, thinking nobody can recognize him. But recognizing him, for anybody with any sense – pah! nothing to it...
– How do they recognize him, then?
– Simple enough. Before, when our Khokhryukov used to travel on the quiet, we’d know him by his heavy hands. If the passenger goes slapping people across the teeth, well, that’s Khokhryukov, that is. But Posudin you can spot straight off... An ordinary passenger just behaves himself plainly, but Posudin’s not the sort to keep to plain manners. He’ll arrive, say, at a post station, and he’ll start in!... Everything stinks to him, it’s stuffy, it’s cold... He must have chicken, and fruit, and every sort of preserves... So at the stations they know: if somebody’s asking for chicken and fruit in the middle of winter, that’s Posudin. If somebody calls the stationmaster "my dear fellow" and sends people running about after all kinds of nonsense, you can swear to it, that’s Posudin. And he doesn’t smell like other people, and he goes to bed in his own particular way... Lies down on the sofa at the station, sprays scent all round himself, and orders three candles set by the pillow. Lies there reading his papers... By then, it’s not just the stationmaster, even a cat could tell what sort of man that is...
"True, true... – Posudin thought. – And how did I never know this before!"
– And whoever has need to, finds out without any fruit or chicken at all. It’s all known by telegraph... However you muffle your mug, however you hide, they already know you’re coming. They’re waiting... Posudin hasn’t even left his own house yet, and there they are already – if you please, everything’s ready! He comes meaning to catch them red-handed, to put someone on trial or turn someone out, and they just laugh at him instead. Even if you did come quietly, your excellency, they say, just look: everything’s clean as a whistle here! He’ll spin round and round and go off with nothing more than he came with... And what’s more, he’ll praise them, shake all their hands, apologize for the trouble... So there! And you thought what? Ho-ho, your honor! The folk here are sharp, one slicker on top of another!... A pleasure to watch, the devils! Take even today’s business, if you like... I’m driving along empty this morning, and coming toward me from the station flies a Jew, an innkeeper. "Where are you off to, your Jewish honor?" I ask. And he says: "To town N., carrying wine and refreshments. They’re expecting Posudin there today." Clever, eh? Posudin might still only be getting ready to go, or muffling his face so nobody’ll know him. He might already be on his way, thinking nobody knows a thing about it, and there, if you please, wine’s ready for him, and salmon, and cheese, and all sorts of refreshments... Eh? He rides along thinking, "It’s all up with you now, my lads," and the lads don’t care a straw! Let him come! They’ve had it all hidden away long since!
– Turn back! – Posudin rasped. – Drive back, you bbbrute!
And the astonished driver turned back.
