1 However bad the attack of gout had been in the night, and however his nerves had ached afterward,
Kistunov nonetheless set off for the office in the morning and began, punctually, to receive the petitioners and clients of the bank. His look was languid, worn out, and he spoke barely audibly, scarcely breathing, like a dying man.
2 "What can I do for you?" he said, turning to
a petitioner in an antediluvian cloak, who from behind bore a great resemblance to a large dung beetle.
3 "If you would be so good as to see,
your excellency," the petitioner began in a rapid patter, "
my husband, the collegiate assessor Shchukin, was ill for five months, and while he was lying at home, if you’ll excuse me, being treated, they dismissed him for no reason at all, your excellency, and when I went for his salary, if you please, they deducted twenty-four rubles and thirty-six kopecks from it! What for? I ask. ’Why,’ they say, ’he took money from the mutual aid fund, and other officials stood surety for him.’ How can that be? Could he possibly have taken it without my consent? That’s impossible, your excellency. But why on earth? I am a poor woman, I live only off my lodgers... I am weak, defenceless... I suffer insult from everyone and hear a kind word from no one..."
4 The petitioner blinked and began fumbling in her cloak for a handkerchief. Kistunov took the petition from her and began to read it.
5 "Excuse me, but how is this?" he said, shrugging his shoulders. "I don’t understand anything. Evidently, madam, you have come to the wrong place. Your request, in substance, has nothing at all to do with us. You would do well to apply to the department where your husband served."
6 "Oh, my dear sir, I have already been to five places, and nowhere would they even take the petition!" said Shchukina. "I had quite lost my head, but thank God, bless
my son-in-law Boris Matveich, he put me up to coming to you. ’Mamasha,’ he says, ’go to Mr. Kistunov: he’s an influential man, he can do anything for you’... Help me, your excellency!"
7 "We, Madam Shchukina, can do nothing at all for you... Do understand: your husband, so far as I can judge, served in the military medical department, while our institution is a purely private, commercial one – we are a bank. How can you fail to understand this!"
8 Kistunov shrugged his shoulders once more and turned to a gentleman in military uniform, with a swollen cheek.
9 "Your excellency," Shchukina sang out in a plaintive voice, "but that my husband was ill, I have a doctor’s certificate! Here it is, if you’ll be so good as to look!"
10 "Very well, I believe you," said Kistunov irritably, "but, I repeat, that has nothing to do with us. It’s strange, even absurd! Can it be that your husband himself doesn’t know where you ought to apply?"
11 "He, your excellency, knows nothing at all. He has just the one refrain: ’It’s none of your business! Get out!’ and that’s all... But whose business is it, then? It’s on my neck that they’re sitting, after all! On mine!"
12 Kistunov turned again to Shchukina and began to explain to her the difference between the military medical department and a private bank. She listened to him attentively, nodded her head in agreement, and said:
13 "Yes, yes, yes... I understand, my dear sir. In that case, your excellency, be so good as to order at least fifteen rubles paid out to me! I’m willing not to have it all at once."
14 "Ugh!" sighed Kistunov, throwing his head back. "There’s no getting it into you! Do understand that coming to us with such a request is just as strange as submitting a petition for divorce, say, to a chemist’s shop or an assay office. You were underpaid, but what have we to do with it?"
15 "Your excellency, may God grant you every blessing for it, have pity on me, an orphan," Shchukina wept. "I am a defenceless woman, weak... I am worn to death... I have to go to law with the lodgers, and bustle about for my husband, and run the household besides, and on top of it all I’m keeping
the fast and my son-in-law is out of a place... The only thing is that people say I eat and drink well, but I can hardly stand on my feet... I haven’t slept all night."
16 Kistunov felt his heart pounding. Making a face of suffering and pressing his hand to his heart, he began once more to explain to Shchukina, but his voice broke off...
17 "No, excuse me, I cannot talk with you," he said, and waved his hand. "My head has actually begun to spin. You are hindering us and wasting your own time for nothing. Ugh!...
Alexei Nikolaich," he turned to one of the clerks, "be so good as to explain matters to Madam Shchukina, will you!"
18 Kistunov, having gone the round of all the petitioners, retired to his own office and signed some ten papers, while Alexei Nikolaich was still occupied with Shchukina. Sitting in his office, Kistunov heard for a long while two voices: the monotonous, restrained bass of Alexei Nikolaich and the weeping, shrieking voice of Shchukina...
19 "I am a defenceless woman, weak, I am a sickly woman," Shchukina was saying. "I may look strong, but if you go into it, there isn’t one sound vein in me. I can scarcely stand on my feet and I’ve lost all appetite... I drank my coffee today, and without the least pleasure in it."
20 And Alexei Nikolaich explained to her the difference between the departments and the complicated system for forwarding papers. Soon he grew weary, and
bookkeeper-bezzaschitnoe-suschestvo/">the bookkeeper took his place.
21 "An astonishingly disgusting woman!" Kistunov fumed, nervously wringing his fingers and going again and again to the carafe of water. "She’s an idiot, a blockhead! She’s worn me out and she’ll wear them out too, the wretch! Ugh... my heart is pounding!"
22 Half an hour later he rang the bell. Alexei Nikolaich appeared.
23 "What’s going on out there?" Kistunov asked languidly.
24 "We simply cannot get it into her,
Pyotr Alexandrych! We’re quite worn out. We tell her about Thomas and she tells us about Jeremy..."
25 "I... I cannot bear the sound of her voice... I’ve fallen ill... I can’t stand it..."
26 "Shall I call the porter, Pyotr Alexandrych, and have him take her out?"
27 "No, no!" Kistunov took fright. "She’ll set up a shriek, and there are a great many apartments in this building, and God knows what they’ll think of us... You’d better try, my dear fellow, to explain it to her somehow."
28 A minute later the droning of Alexei Nikolaich’s voice was heard again. A quarter of an hour passed, and in place of his bass there began to buzz the bookkeeper’s hoarse tenor.
29 "Re-mark-ably vile creature!" Kistunov fumed, his shoulders twitching nervously. "Stupid as a gray gelding, devil take her. It seems my gout is starting up again... And now a migraine too..."
30 In the next room Alexei Nikolaich, worn out, at last rapped his finger on the table, then on his own forehead.
31 "In a word, what you’ve got on your shoulders isn’t a head," he said, "but this..."
32 "Well, there’s no call for that... " the old woman took offense. "Go rap on your wife’s head... You crack-brained fool! Don’t be so free with your hands."
33 And, looking at her with malice, with a kind of fury, as if he wanted to swallow her whole, Alexei Nikolaich said in a low, choked voice:
34 "Get out of here!"
35 "Wha-at?" Shchukina suddenly shrieked. "How dare you? I am a weak, defenceless woman, I won’t allow it! My husband is a collegiate assessor! You crack-brained fool! I’ll go to
the lawyer Dmitri Karlych, and there won’t be a trace of you left! I’ve had three lodgers taken to court, and for your insolent words you’ll grovel at my feet! I’ll go to your general! Your excellency! Your excellency!"
36 "Get out of here, you plague!" hissed Alexei Nikolaich.
37 Kistunov opened the door and looked out into the office.
38 "What is it?" he asked in a tearful voice. Shchukina, red as a lobster, stood in the middle of the room, and, rolling her eyes, jabbed her fingers at the air. The clerks of the bank stood off to the sides, also red, visibly worn out, and exchanged bewildered glances.
39 "Your excellency!" Shchukina rushed to Kistunov. "This one here, this very one... this one..." (she pointed at Alexei Nikolaich) "rapped his finger against his forehead, and then against the table... You told him to attend to my case, and he mocks me! I am a weak, defenceless woman... My husband is a collegiate assessor, and I myself am a major’s daughter!"
40 "Very well, madam," groaned Kistunov, "I shall look into it... I shall take measures... Go now... come back later!.."
41 "And when shall I get it, your excellency? I need the money today!"
42 Kistunov passed a trembling hand over his forehead, sighed, and began to explain once more:
43 "Madam, I have already told you. This is a bank, a private, commercial institution... What is it you want of us? Do understand plainly that you’re hindering us."
44 Shchukina heard him out and sighed.
45 "Yes, yes... " she agreed. "Only be so kind, your excellency, do me the favor, may God grant you every blessing for it, be a father to me, protect me. If the doctor’s certificate isn’t enough, I can bring a certificate from the police station too... Do order the money paid to me!"
46 Everything went dim before Kistunov’s eyes. He breathed out all the air there was in his lungs, and sank into a chair in utter exhaustion.
47 "How much do you want to receive?" he asked in a weak voice.
48 "Twenty-four rubles and thirty-six kopecks."
49 Kistunov took his wallet from his pocket, drew out a
twenty-five-ruble note, and handed it to Shchukina.
50 "Take it and... and go!"
51 Shchukina wrapped the money in her handkerchief, hid it away, and, puckering her face into a sweet, delicate, even coquettish little smile, asked:
52 "Your excellency, and might it be possible for my husband to get his position back again?"
53 "I’m going away... I’m ill... " said Kistunov in a languid voice. "I have a terrible pounding of the heart."
54 After he had gone, Alexei Nikolaich sent
Nikita for some cherry-laurel drops, and everyone, having taken twenty drops apiece, settled down to work again, while Shchukina sat on for another two hours or so in the anteroom, talking with the porter and waiting for Kistunov to return.
55 She came again the next day as well.
