At the Marshal's Widow's

Headnote

"At the Marshal’s Widow’s" dates from 1884, the year Chekhov qualified as a physician and, not coincidentally, the year his comic sketches begin to carry more structure than his earliest calendar-items and mock notices. This is a set-piece: the annual memorial service the widowed Lyubov Petrovna holds for her late husband, the district marshal of nobility, who drank and gambled himself into an early grave – and the temperance she has since imposed on her household in his memory.

The joke is architectural rather than verbal. Chekhov builds the piece in two movements: first the solemn ritual (the panikhida, the incense, the choir tuning itself to melancholy) rendered with real observational precision, then its total collapse the moment the guests reach the table and discover there is no vodka. The comedy is in the guests’ unanimous, wordless conspiracy to evade the widow’s vow – forgotten handkerchiefs in fur coats, forgotten cigar cases in sleighs, sudden urgent business in the stable – each excuse a thin cover for a trip to a hidden bottle. Chekhov never states the conspiracy; he only tracks the empty bottles Mikeshka smuggles out and lets the reader do the arithmetic.

The final movement – Lyubov Petrovna’s letter to her Petersburg friend, reporting the same afternoon as a triumph of sentiment and sobriety, complete with a guest who "fell into hysterics" and another carried out unconscious – is the real punchline: her account and the reader’s are the same events, witnessed by someone constitutionally unable to see what happened in front of her. It is an early instance of the double perspective (the told version against the shown version) that becomes one of Chekhov’s most durable devices. The names – Zavzyatov, Marfutkin, Dvornyagin – carry the broad comic transparency typical of the Antosha Chekhonte years; the technique underneath them is already reaching past that period.
