Biographies of Notable Contemporaries

Headnote

"Biographies of Notable Contemporaries" was published in 1883, during Chekhov’s most productive years as Antosha Chekhonte, the pseudonym under which he supplied the Moscow humor weeklies with dozens of short comic pieces a year while completing his medical studies. It belongs to his favorite early device: the found document. Rather than narrate directly, Chekhov stages a frame – here a covering letter, purportedly from one Nikifor Khrustalev, forwarding his late brother’s manuscript to an editor – and lets the comedy emerge from the gap between the pretensions of the form (a biographical dictionary, a respectful obituary notice) and the illiterate, mercenary, alcohol-soaked reality of the men producing it.

The joke works on two levels at once. The frame narrator, the dying "stabs-captain" Pyotr Khrustalev, is himself a figure of comic bathos – a minor army officer nicknamed the "schnapps-captain" for his drinking, who spends his last words not on his family or his soul but on his literary ambitions. And the "biography" he leaves behind, of the patent-medicine huckster Alexander Ivanovich Ivanov, is a merciless parody of the puffery that filled the back pages of Russian newspapers in the early 1880s: invented academic honors, invented anniversaries, an invented product ("Rafanistrol") whose only real property is that rubbing it on your skin does not immediately kill you. The mock scholarly apparatus – disputed birthdates cross-checked against a comet and a volcanic eruption, elections to fictitious "academies," a chronology of ever more absurd honors culminating in membership among a confectioner’s "honorary patrons" – targets the whole apparatus of Russian civic self-importance as much as it targets patent medicine specifically.

The piece is broad, fast, and built for a magazine page: single-purpose gags stacked without much concern for plausibility, closer to a comic sketch or caption than to a story in the later sense. It sits with a run of similar mock-document pieces from Chekhov’s Chekhonte years – false notices, spurious calendars, parody advertisements – that trained the ear and timing later put to more serious use. Watch for the telltale comic tics of the format: the narrator’s malapropisms and overreaching vocabulary (he does not fully understand the very praise he is delivering), the studied gravity of the biographical conventions being mocked, and the closing signature that returns the reader, deadpan, to the frame.

I. A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I. ПИСЬМО В РЕДАКЦИЮ
Dear sir, Mr. Editor!
Last week, on Friday, my elder brother Pyotr Guryich Khrustalev, stabs-captain, died of stomach cancer – he lived on 2nd Yamskaya in the house of the merchant Chernobryukhov, and used to call himself, jokingly, on account of his drinking, the "schnapps-captain." As he lay dying, he called me to his deathbed and said, in a piteous voice:
"Nikifor! It’s kaput and finish for me... But I do not despair, for human life, by its very nature, like everything else, is confined within bounds. So it has stood in nature since time began. If all men lived and never died, there would be no room for them, not only in the houses but even on the roofs... Listen! You know that all my life I have suffered from a bad quality, namely drink. Besides that, I had an inclination toward literature. Take this notebook and after my death carry it to some editorial office, so that people may learn what manner of man I was and how well I understand everything. Ask them to print it in large type."
Having said this, my brother gave me the notebook and died. On the notebook is written: "Biographies of Notable Contemporaries." Of literary compositions I understand little, being ignorant, but my brother’s "Biographies" please me enormously. In their style and eloquence they resemble somewhat the "Outside Reports" of Mr. Nikolai Bazunov, printed in the "News of the Day," and therefore I have the honor to ask, your high excellency, not to disdain but to carry out the wish of the departed.

II. ALEXANDER IVANOVICH IVANOV
II.
The famous inventor of the fetlock-and-hoof, wheel, and other ointments
Alexander Ivanovich Ivanov, this great fetlock-and-hoof man, was born in the nineteenth century of poor but noble parents, in an unknown place. In the opinion of a great many learned historians and philosophers, the day and hour of his birth coincide with the appearance in the sky of the comet of 1848. The Paris Academy of Sciences, however, denies this and names as the day of his birth the 23rd of March, 1849 – the day on which Vesuvius erupted. It is related that A.I., in the very first minute of his life, glanced at the midwife receiving him and burst into bitter tears, and by this alone showed his displeasure with contemporary medicine. Already in his earliest years an experienced eye could detect in the infant his genius for fetlock-and-hoof and ringworm remedies. While his playmates gave themselves over to childish games, he sat off in some corner and busied himself with various liquid household necessities. Thus he loved to stir blacking, to mold little men out of putty, to make dough out of sand, and other such things, which speak not so much to the usefulness of what was done as to the inclinations and talent of the one doing it. His favorite occupation, too, was to walk barefoot, trousers rolled up, through puddles and other not-dry places. At seven he was given by his parents to be taught letters and numbers. Having quickly learned to read, he showed yet another peculiarity of his character: namely, he took to reading diligently and attentively the advertisements of Guyot, Johann Hoff, and our own countryman Leukhin. When he was asked the reasons for which he preferred these advertisements to all other branches of science, he would answer modestly: "I am studying." Having mastered reading, copybook penmanship, and arithmetic, he abandoned learning and devoted his life to the search for new means of curing suffering horses, and, should his abilities suffice, men as well. He mixed sand with honey, honey with blacking, blacking with tallow, and stirred these and many other substances together until there resulted a compound having neither smell nor appearance, but fit for any use whatever. Having smeared himself with this ointment and not having died of it, A.I. concluded, quite reasonably, that the ointment was curative and that it ought to be sold at two rubles the jar. Having concluded this, he printed advertisements in the newspapers, and from this time (1875) begins his fame. But where there is fame, there are envious men and ill-wishers. An ointment capable of curing every disease, and at the same time used with success in place of pomade, blacking, tar, and putty, threw many narrow minds into confusion. Accusations of charlatanism, impudence, and exploitation of ignorance rained down. And, to humanity’s shame, these accusations went so far, on occasion, that the great inventor was more than once summoned as a defendant before the justice of the peace. But at the same time justice did not slumber. It has been known since ancient days that virtue triumphs and vice is vanquished. Buyers went in crowds to A.I.’s shop, situated on Strastnoy Boulevard, and snapped up his ointment. More than that, thousands of letters of thanks poured in, addressed to the immortal healer. To crown it all, the Naples Academy of Sciences elected him an honorary member, and by this plainly showed that we do not know how to value our own. In 1882 the Warsaw confectionery elected him an honorary patron. In 1883 the "Venice" and the "Prague" proclaimed the great inventor their honorary hereditary regular, and in this present year, 1884, on account of his invention "Rafanistrol," he found his way into my "Biographies of Notable Contemporaries." For I have made use of his new ointment not only against pimples, but have also been cured by it of drink, and have used it against bedbugs and other vermin as well.
