At a Magnetism Séance

Headnote

“At a Magnetism Séance” (На магнетическом сеансе) appeared in 1883, during Chekhov’s Antosha Chekhonte years, when he was turning out short comic pieces for the Moscow humor magazines at a rate that supported his family while he was still a medical student. Mesmerism and stage hypnotism were a minor craze in Russian drawing rooms of the period – imported entertainers would put volunteers from the audience into trances, stiffen their limbs, and pronounce on the mysterious workings of the nervous system, to general gasping. Chekhov, whose father was in fact a shopkeeper rather than a physician (the narrator’s claim to have inherited a doctor’s diagnostic touch is one of the story’s small fictions, and an early, glancing joke about the medical training Chekhov himself was undergoing at the time), takes the whole apparatus of the séance and deflates it with a single prop: a five-ruble note pressed into the sleeper’s palm.

The piece is built as a first-person burlesque confession, and its comedy runs on a doubled discovery. The narrator first discovers that his own susceptibility to hypnotic suggestion is really just alertness to the feel of money – the "science" onstage is theater, and his own trance is a performance of a performance. Then, in the postscript that swerves the story onto a second axis entirely, he discovers that the money was never the magnetizer’s at all: his superior planted it to test his honesty, and the narrator has failed a test he did not know he was taking, in front of a crowd, for effectively public humiliation. The mock-solemn medical vocabulary of the séance scene (anesthesia, tetanus, pulse and temperature) gives way to the mock-solemn vocabulary of a workplace dressing-down; both are equally performances of authority.

Watch for the swiftness of the reversal and Chekhov’s refusal to let the narrator off with a clean moral: he does not repent so much as calculate that reputation costs more than the two five-ruble notes he must hand back, and the closing jab is aimed sideways, at his superior’s wife, rather than inward. The German-inflected aside the superior levels at him near the end (hat-gewesen, roughly "has-beened," a mocking bit of mangled German of a kind common in the period’s comic idiom for pomposity or ruin) belongs to the same register of borrowed authority the story spends its length puncturing.

The great hall blazed with lights and swarmed with people. In it reigned the magnetizer. Despite his physical insignificance and want of solidity, he shone, he gleamed, he sparkled. People smiled at him, applauded him, obeyed him... They paled before him.
He worked literal wonders. One man he put to sleep, another he stiffened rigid, a third he laid with the back of his head on one chair and his heels on another... A tall, thin journalist he bent into a spiral. He did, in a word, the devil knows what. He had an especially powerful effect on the ladies.
They dropped from his gaze like flies. Oh, the nerves of women! Were it not for them, life on this earth would be dull indeed!
Having tried his devilish art on everyone, the magnetizer came up to me as well.
“It seems to me you have a very pliant nature,” he said to me. “You’re so nervous, so expressive... Would you care to fall asleep?”
Why not fall asleep? Very well, my good man, try. I sat down on a chair in the middle of the hall. The magnetizer sat down on a chair vis-\`a-vis, took me by the hands, and fixed his terrible serpent eyes on my poor eyes.
The public gathered round us.
“Shh... Ladies and gentlemen! Shh... Quiet!”
They quieted down... We sit, looking into each other’s pupils... A minute passes, two... Shivers ran down my spine, my heart began to pound, but I did not feel sleepy...
We sit... Five minutes pass, seven...
“He won’t give in!” someone said. “Bravo! Well done, that man!”
We sit, we look... I don’t feel sleepy, I don’t even feel drowsy... From a municipal or a district-council report I’d long since have been asleep... The public begins to whisper, to snigger... The magnetizer grows embarrassed and begins blinking his eyes... Poor fellow! Who likes to suffer a fiasco? Save him, spirits, send Morpheus down onto my eyelids!
“He won’t give in!” says the same voice. “Enough, drop it! Didn’t I say this was all a trick!”
And then, just as I, heeding my friend’s voice, made a move to get up, my hand felt in my palm a foreign object... Putting my sense of touch to work, I recognized the object as a banknote. My papa was a doctor, and doctors know the quality of a banknote by touch alone. By Darwin’s theory I had inherited from papa, along with many other abilities, this charming one as well. In the banknote I recognized a five-ruble note. Having recognized it, I instantly fell asleep.
“Bravo, magnetizer!”
The doctors present in the hall came up to me, turned me this way and that, sniffed, and said:
“Well now... Put to sleep...”
The magnetizer, pleased with his success, waved his hands over my head, and I, asleep, walked across the hall.
“Tetanize his arm!” someone suggested. “Can you? Let his arm go rigid...”
The magnetizer (no timid man!) stretched out my right arm and began to work his manipulations on it: rubbed it, blew on it, patted it. My arm would not obey. It dangled like a rag and showed no intention of going rigid.
“No tetanus! Wake him, it’s harmful otherwise... He’s a frail one, nervous...”
Then my left hand felt a five-ruble note in its palm... The irritation carried by reflex from the left hand to the right, and instantly the arm went rigid.
“Bravo! Look how firm and cold! Like a corpse!”
“Complete anesthesia, a drop in temperature, and a weakened pulse,” the magnetizer reported.
The doctors began feeling my arm.
“Yes, the pulse is weaker,” one of them remarked. “Complete tetanus. The temperature is much lower...”
“How is this to be explained?” asked one of the little ladies.
The doctor shrugged significantly, sighed, and said:
“We have only the facts! Explanations – alas! – we have none...”
You have facts, and I have two five-ruble notes. Mine are worth more... Thank magnetism for that much, at least; explanations I have no need of...
Poor magnetizer! And why did you go tying yourself to me, you viper?
P.S. Well, isn’t this an outrage? Isn’t this swinish? I’ve just learned that it wasn’t the magnetizer who put the five-ruble notes into my fist, but Pyotr Fyodorych, my superior...
“I did that,” he says, “in order to find out how honest you are...”
Ah, the devil take it!
“Shame on you, brother... Not good... I didn’t expect it...”
“But I have children, your excellency... A wife... A mother... In these times of high prices...”
“Not good... And you want to publish your own newspaper besides... You weep when you read speeches at dinners... For shame... I thought you were an honest man, and it turns out you’re... hat-gewesen...”
I was obliged to return the two five-ruble notes to him. What was I to do? Reputation is worth more than money.
“I’m not angry with you!” says my superior. “The devil take you, that’s simply your nature... But she! She! A-mazing! She! Meekness, innocence, blancmange, and all the rest of it! Eh? And she too was tempted by the money! She fell asleep too!”
By “she” my superior means his own wife, Matryona Nikolaevna...
