The konka (horse-tram) was a horse-drawn streetcar running on rails, the standard urban mass transit of Moscow and Petersburg before electric trams replaced it beginning in the 1890s -- an ordinary, crowded, democratic conveyance, in pointed contrast to Krikunov's private railway compartment with the singer.
