5 Doctor Shelestov, the culprit of the incident of the 2nd of October, is getting ready for this meeting; he has already been standing before the mirror a long while, trying to give his physiognomy a languid expression. If he shows up at the meeting now with a face that is agitated, strained, red, or too pale, his enemies might imagine that he attaches great importance to their intrigues; but if his face is cold, impassive, as though half-asleep – the sort of face people have who stand above the crowd and are weary of life – then all his enemies, glancing at him, will secretly be filled with respect and think:
6 He raised on high his unsubmitting head
8 Like a man little interested in his enemies and their squabbles, he will arrive at the meeting later than everyone else. He will enter the hall noiselessly, pass his hand languidly over his hair, and, without looking at anyone, sit down at the very edge of the table. Assuming the pose of a bored listener, he will yawn almost imperceptibly, draw some newspaper toward himself, and begin to read... Everyone will talk, argue, grow heated, call each other to order, while he stays silent and looks into the paper. But then, at last, when his name begins to be repeated more and more often and the burning question has heated to white heat, he will raise his bored, weary eyes to his colleagues and say, as though reluctantly:
9 “I am being forced to speak... I have not prepared, gentlemen, and so, forgive me, my speech will not be sufficiently coherent. I shall begin ab ovo... from the very beginning... (Latin). At the last meeting certain esteemed colleagues declared that I do not conduct myself at consultations as they would like, and demanded an explanation from me. Finding explanations superfluous and the accusation made in bad faith, I asked to be struck from the roll of members of the Society and withdrew. Now, however, when a new series of accusations is being brought against me, I see, to my sorrow, that I cannot do without explaining myself. Very well, I shall explain.”
10 Further on, carelessly toying with a pencil or a watch chain, he will say that, indeed, at consultations he sometimes raises his voice and cuts colleagues short, without being embarrassed by the presence of outsiders; it is also true that once, at a consultation, in the presence of doctors and relatives, he asked a patient: “What fool prescribed you opium?” Scarcely a consultation goes by without an incident... But why? Very simply. At consultations he, Shelestov, is always struck by the low level of knowledge among his colleagues. There are thirty-two doctors in the town, and most of them know less than any first-year student. One need not go far for examples. Of course, nomina sunt odiosa names are odious (names are best left unsaid) (Latin)., but at a meeting everyone here is among friends, and besides, so as not to seem to be speaking without grounds, one may name names. For instance, everyone knows that our esteemed colleague von Bron perforated the esophagus of
the clerk’s wife Serezhkina with a probe...
11 At this point von Bron will leap up, throw up his hands, and cry out:
12 “Colleague, it was you who perforated it, not I! You! And I shall prove it to you!”
13 Shelestov will pay him no attention and will go on:
14 “It is also well known that our esteemed colleague
Zhila, at
the actress Semiramidina’s, mistook a floating kidney for an abscess and made an exploratory puncture, from which there presently followed an exitus letalis a fatal outcome (Latin).. Our esteemed colleague
Besstrunko, instead of removing the toenail on the big toe of the left foot, removed the healthy nail on the right foot. Nor can I fail to remind you of the case in which our esteemed colleague
Terkharyants catheterized the soldier
Ivanov’s Eustachian tubes with such zeal that the patient burst both eardrums. I recall, incidentally, how this same colleague, while extracting a tooth, dislocated a patient’s lower jaw and did not set it back until the patient agreed to pay him five rubles for the setting. Our esteemed colleague
Kuritsyn is married to the niece of
the apothecary Grummer and is in collusion with him. Everyone also knows that
the secretary of our Society, young colleague
Skoropalitelny, is living with the wife of our most esteemed and honorable chairman
Gustav Gustavovich Prechtel... From the low level of knowledge I have passed imperceptibly to failings of an ethical nature. All the better. Ethics, gentlemen, is our sore spot, and, so as not to seem to be speaking without grounds, I shall name for you our esteemed colleague
Puzyrkov, who, while at the name-day party of
the colonel’s wife Treshchinskaya, related that it was supposedly not Skoropalitelny but I myself who is living with our chairman’s wife! This is said by that very Mr. Puzyrkov whom I myself caught last year with the wife of our esteemed
colleague Znobish! And speaking of Doctor Znobish... Who enjoys the reputation of a physician it is not entirely safe for ladies to be treated by? Znobish... Who married a merchant’s daughter for her dowry? Znobish! As for our universally esteemed chairman, he secretly practices
homeopathy and takes money from the Prussians for spying. A Prussian spy – now that is truly the ultima ratio! the last argument! (Latin).”
15 Doctors, when they wish to appear clever and eloquent, employ two Latin expressions: nomina sunt odiosa and ultima ratio. Shelestov will speak not only in Latin but in French and German too – whatever is called for! He will expose everyone, tear the masks from the intriguers; the chairman will tire himself out ringing his bell, the esteemed colleagues will leap up from their seats, cry out, wave their arms about... The colleagues of the Hebrew faith will gather together in a knot and set up a clamor:
17 Shelestov, however, heeding nothing, will go on:
18 “As for the Society as a whole, given its present composition and practices, it is bound inevitably to perish. Everything in it is built exclusively on intrigues. Intrigues, intrigues, and more intrigues! I, as one of the victims of this unbroken, demonic intrigue, consider it my duty to set forth the following...”
19 He will hold forth, and his party will applaud and rub their hands together triumphantly. And so, amid an unimaginable uproar and peals of thunder, the election of the chairman begins. Von Bron and Co. stand firmly for Prechtel, but the public and the right-thinking doctors hiss at them and shout:
20 “Down with Prechtel! We ask for Shelestov! Shelestov!”
21 Shelestov agrees, but on condition that Prechtel and von Bron ask his forgiveness for the incident of the 2nd of October. Once again an unimaginable din arises, and once again the esteemed colleagues of the Hebrew faith gather into a knot and – “gah-gah-gah...” Prechtel and von Bron, outraged, end by asking that they no longer be counted among the members of the Society. And splendid!
22 Shelestov is chairman. First of all he will clean out the Augean stables. Znobish – out! Terkharyants – out! The esteemed colleagues of the Hebrew faith – out! With his party he will see to it that by January there is not a single intriguer left in the Society. In the Society’s clinic he will first of all order the walls of the outpatient room painted and a notice hung up: “Smoking Strictly Forbidden”; then he will drive out
the feldsher and the feldsher’s wife, procure medicines not from Grummer but from
Khryashchambzhitsky, require the doctors not to perform a single operation without his supervision, and so on. And, above all, he will have printed on his visiting cards: “Chairman of the Society of N. Physicians.”
23 So dreams Shelestov, standing at home before his mirror. But now the clock strikes seven and reminds him that it is time to leave for the meeting. He wakes from his sweet reverie and hurries to give his face its languid expression, but – alas! – he wants to make his face languid and interesting, and it will not obey; it turns sour and dull, like a chilled mongrel puppy’s; he wants to make it dignified, and it stretches out and expresses bewilderment, so that now it seems to him he resembles not a puppy but a goose. He lowers his eyelids, narrows his eyes, puffs out his cheeks, wrinkles his brow, but – it’s hopeless! – what comes out is not at all what he wanted. Such must simply be the natural properties of this face, that nothing is to be done with it. A narrow forehead, small eyes darting quickly like a sly market-woman’s, a lower jaw jutting forward stupidly and absurdly, while the cheeks and the shock of hair look exactly as though this “esteemed colleague” had been thrown out of a billiard hall a minute before.
24 Shelestov looks at this face of his, grows angry, and begins to feel that it too is intriguing against him. He goes into the front hall, dresses, and it seems to him that the fur coat, the galoshes, and the hat are all intriguing too.
25 “Cabman, to the clinic!” he shouts.
26 He offers a twenty-
kopeck piece, and the intriguing cabmen ask for a quarter-
ruble... He gets into the cab, drives off, and the cold wind beats against his face, wet snow covers his eyes, the wretched little horse plods along barely moving. Everything has conspired, everything is intriguing... Intrigues, intrigues, and more intrigues!
