The vain protagonist, culprit of the 'incident of the 2nd of October,' who rehearses before his mirror an elaborate imagined triumph at the Society's chairman election -- a speech exposing colleagues' blunders and scandals, his own election, and a purge of his enemies -- all pure daydream that collapses when his face and the weather refuse to cooperate.
