• A Happy Ending §1 engaged in matchmaking and many other affairs

  Professional matchmakers (свахи) were a recognized fixture of merchant- and petty-official-class Russian life, paid to arrange introductions and negotiate dowries; the narrator's coy aside that Lyubov Grigoryevna's "other affairs" are "the kind one is expected to mention only in a whisper" signals from the outset that her business extends beyond respectable matchmaking, a hint the story cashes in at §17.

• A Happy Ending §17 unmarried sort of goods... little Frenchwoman... Greek girls

  Having failed to interest Stychkin in a wife on her usual terms, Lyubov Grigoryevna pivots to offering him access to women for a different kind of arrangement, using the frankly commercial vocabulary of "goods" (товар) and "worthwhile articles" (стоющие) and identifying them only by nationality -- "a Frenchwoman" and "one of the Greek girls." In the period demimonde of Russian port and railway towns, foreign-born women, especially French and Greek, were stock figures associated with commercial sex work, often stereotyped as more sophisticated or exotic than local women. Chekhov gives Lyubov Grigoryevna this line to reveal, in a single stroke, the full and casually commodifying scope of her "business" beyond legitimate matchmaking; the translation keeps her language as brusquely transactional and reductive as the Russian, without softening it, since the passage's discomfort is the point -- it exposes the ordinary cruelty of treating women, and especially foreign women, as interchangeable stock-in-trade.
