The Examination for Rank

Экзамен на чин

Headnote

The Examination for Rank” appeared in 1884, one of the scores of short comic pieces the young Antosha Chekhonte was filing to the humor weeklies that year while completing his medical studies. Its target is a small, precise piece of Imperial Russian bureaucratic machinery: a postal clerk of twenty-one years’ service, required to sit a formal examination before he can be advanced to the very first rung of the civil-service Table of Ranks, collegiate registrar — the lowest classed rank in the whole edifice, and still not to be had without an inspector’s approval.

The comedy runs on two engines at once. One is a private grudge: Fendrikov has offended the geography teacher Galkin by insisting a customer wait his turn at the post-office counter, and Galkin, seated on the examining board, has been waiting all year for the chance to fail him. The other is the absurdity of the institution itself — a provincial school hallway crowded with functionaries (a warden, a scripture teacher in his skufia, an inspector irritated by dust) staging a solemn ordeal over stereometry and the tributaries of the Ganges for a man whose actual qualification is twenty-one years of sorting mail. Fendrikov’s answers curdle from proud recitation into wheedling piety — invoking the archpriest, promising to pray for the rest of his life — and Chekhonte lets the comedy tip toward something more uncomfortable: a grown man’s dignity dissolving in real time under an arbitrary, personally motivated test.

The ending withholds the verdict on the examination itself; instead Fendrikov, apparently through, is already tormented by a different, smaller grief — that he wasted a whole month studying stereometry, a subject not even on the syllabus. It is a small, characteristic redirection: the scene’s real anxiety was never really about rank or Galkin’s malice, but about wasted effort, and the story ends there rather than on triumph or disgrace.
