1 Fyodor Lukich Sysoev, the teacher of the factory school maintained at the expense of "
Kulikin Sons Manufactory," was getting ready for the ceremonial dinner. Every year, after the examinations, the factory management held a dinner attended by
the inspector of public schools, everyone who had been present at the examinations, and the factory administration. The dinners, for all their official character, always turned out long, merry, and delicious; forgetting rank and remembering only their own righteous labors, the teachers ate their fill, drank together heartily, chattered until they were hoarse, and dispersed late in the evening, filling the whole factory settlement with singing and the sound of kisses. Sysoev had lived through thirteen such dinners, corresponding to the number of years he had served in the factory school.
2 Now, preparing for the fourteenth dinner, he tried to give himself as festive and decorous an appearance as possible. For a whole hour he brushed his new black suit with a little whisk broom, and stood almost as long before the mirror while putting on a fashionable shirtfront; the cufflinks went badly into the buttonholes of the shirt, and this circumstance provoked a whole storm of complaints, threats, and reproaches addressed to
his wife. Running about him, the poor wife wore herself out. And he himself grew exhausted in the end. When his polished ankle-boots were brought from the kitchen, he no longer had the strength to pull them onto his feet. He had to lie down for a while and drink some water.
3 "How weak you’ve become!" sighed his wife. "You oughtn’t to go to this dinner at all."
4 "Kindly spare me your advice!" the teacher cut her off angrily.
5 He was in a thoroughly bad temper, being very displeased with the recent examinations. The examinations themselves had gone splendidly; all the boys of the senior division had been awarded certificates and prizes; the authorities, both the factory’s and the government’s, were satisfied with the results – but this was not enough for the teacher. It vexed him that the pupil
Babkin, who always wrote without a single mistake, had made three mistakes in the examination dictation; that the pupil
Sergeyev, from nervousness, had failed to multiply 17 by 13; that the inspector, a young and inexperienced man, had chosen a difficult passage for the dictation, and that
Lyapunov, the teacher from the neighboring school whom the inspector had asked to read it aloud, had behaved "unlike a colleague": while dictating he had pronounced the words differently from how they were written, and seemed fairly to chew them.
6 Having pulled on his ankle-boots with his wife’s help, and having looked himself over once more in the mirror, the teacher took his knotty walking stick and set off for the dinner. Right at the entrance to the factory
director’s apartment, where the celebration was being arranged, a small misfortune befell him. He suddenly began to cough. From the fits of coughing his cap flew off his head and the stick fell from his hands, and when, hearing his cough, the teachers and the school inspector ran out of the director’s apartment, he was sitting on the bottom step, bathed in sweat.
7 "Fyodor Lukich, is that you?" said the inspector in astonishment. "You... have come?"
8 "And what of it?"
9 "You ought to be sitting at home, my dear fellow. You’re quite unwell today..."
10 "Today I am just as I was yesterday. And if my presence is unpleasant to you, I can leave."
11 "Come now, what is this talk for, Fyodor Lukich? Why say such a thing? You’re most welcome! Indeed, it is not we but you who are the guest of honor of this celebration. We are only too glad, I assure you!.."
12 In the factory director’s apartment everything was already prepared for the celebration. In the large dining room, with its German oleographs and its smell of geranium and varnish, stood two tables: one large, for the dinner, the other smaller, for hors d’oeuvres. Through the lowered blinds the midday, sultry light barely broke through... The dimness of the room, the Swiss views on the blinds, the geranium, the thinly sliced sausage on the plates – all looked naive, girlishly sentimental, and all of it resembled the master of the house himself, a small good-natured German with a round little belly and oily, tender little eyes.
Adolf Andreich Bruni (for that was the host’s name) bustled about the hors d’oeuvres table as though at a fire, pouring out glasses, heaping up plates, and trying in every way to please, to amuse, to show his good will. He clapped people on the shoulders, peered into their eyes, giggled, rubbed his hands – in a word, he fawned, like a good dog.
13 "Fyodor Lukich, whom do I see!" he began in a breathless voice, catching sight of Sysoev. "How glad we are! In spite of your illness, you have come!.. Gentlemen, allow me to gladden you: Fyodor Lukich has come!"
14 Around the hors d’oeuvres table the schoolteachers were already crowding and eating. Sysoev frowned; he did not like that his colleagues had begun to eat and drink without waiting for him. He picked out Lyapunov among them, the very one who had read the dictation at the examination, and, going up to him, began:
15 "That was not the act of a colleague! No, indeed! Decent people do not dictate that way!"
16 "Good Lord, you’re still on about that!" said Lyapunov, wincing. "Haven’t you tired of it yet?"
17 "Yes, still on about it! My Babkin never made mistakes before! I know why you dictated as you did. You simply wanted my pupils to fail, so that your school would look better than mine. I understand everything!.."
18 "Now what are you finding fault for?" snapped Lyapunov. "What
the devil are you pestering me for?"
19 "Enough, gentlemen," the inspector intervened, making a plaintive face. "Come now, is it worth getting heated over trifles? Three mistakes... not one mistake... well, isn’t it all the same?"
20 "No, it is not all the same. My Babkin never made mistakes!"
21 "He pesters everyone!" Lyapunov went on, snorting angrily. "He takes advantage of being a sick man and eats everyone alive. Well, my good fellow, I shan’t spare you on account of your illness!"
22 "Leave my illness in peace!" Sysoev cried angrily. "What business is it of yours? You all harp on the same thing: illness! illness! illness!.. Much I need your sympathy! And where did you get the idea that I’m ill, anyway? I was ill before the examinations, that’s true, but now I’ve quite recovered, only a certain weakness remains."
23 "You’ve recovered, well, thank God for that," said the school chaplain,
Father Nikolai, a young
priest in a dandyish brown
cassock and trousers worn outside his boots. "You ought to rejoice, but instead you grow irritable and so forth."
24 "You’re a fine one too," Sysoev interrupted him. "Questions ought to be straightforward, clear, but you kept setting riddles the whole time. That won’t do!"
25 By their combined efforts they somehow calmed him and seated him at the table. He deliberated a long while over what to drink, and, making a sour face, drank off half a glass of some green cordial, then drew toward himself a piece of pie and picked out of the filling, with much fuss, the egg and onion. From the very first bite the pie seemed to him flat and tasteless. He salted it and at once angrily pushed it away, for the pie turned out to be oversalted.
26 At the dinner Sysoev was seated between the inspector and Bruni. After the first course, following the long-established custom, the toasts began.
27 "I consider it a pleasant duty," began the inspector, "to thank the absent patrons of the school,
Daniil Petrovich and... and..."
30 "For my part," said Bruni, jumping up as though stung, "I propose a toast to the health of our esteemed inspector of public schools,
Pavel Gennadievich Nadarov!"
31 Chairs were pushed back, faces broke into smiles, and the usual clinking of glasses began. The third toast always belonged to Sysoev. And this time too he rose and began to speak. Assuming a serious expression and clearing his throat, he first of all declared that he had no gift of eloquence and had not prepared to speak. Further he said that in his fourteen years of service there had been much intrigue, many underhanded schemes, and even denunciations against him, and that he knew his enemies and his denunciators but did not wish to name them "for fear of spoiling someone’s appetite"; that in spite of the intrigues,
the Kulikin school had taken first place in the whole province, "not only morally but even materially."
32 "Elsewhere," he said, "teachers get two or three hundred, but I get five hundred rubles, and besides that my apartment has been newly done up and even furnished at the factory’s expense. And this year all the walls have been repapered..."
33 The teacher went on at length about how generously, compared to the
zemstvo and government schools, the pupils were supplied with writing materials. And all this, in his opinion, the school owed not to the factory owners, who lived abroad and scarcely even knew of the school’s existence, but to the man who, despite his German origin and
Lutheran faith, possessed a Russian soul. Sysoev spoke for a long time, with pauses and with pretensions to eloquence, and his speech came out drawn-out and disagreeable. Several times he alluded to certain enemies of his, tried to speak in hints, repeated himself, coughed, moved his fingers unbecomingly. Toward the end he grew tired, broke into a sweat, and began to speak softly, haltingly, as if to himself, and did not finish his speech quite coherently:
34 "And so, I propose we drink to Bruni, that is, to Adolf Andreich, who, among us here... in general... is understood."
35 When he finished, everyone breathed easily, as though someone had sprinkled cold water into the air and dispelled the closeness. No one seemed to feel any unpleasantness – no one, that is, except Bruni. Beaming, and rolling his sentimental eyes,
the German shook Sysoev’s hand with feeling and once more fawned upon him like a dog.
36 "Oh, I thank you!" he said, laying stress on the "oh" and pressing his left hand to his heart. "I am very happy that you understand me! I wish you, with all my soul, everything of the best! But I must observe that you exaggerate my importance. It is to you alone, my most esteemed friend Fyodor Lukich, that the school owes its flourishing! Without you it would be no different from any other school! You think: the German is paying a compliment, the German is being polite. Ha-ha! No, my dear soul, Fyodor Lukich, I am an honest man and I never pay compliments. If we pay you five hundred rubles a year, then it means you are dear to us. Isn’t that so? Gentlemen, am I not speaking the truth? We would not pay another man so much... I ask you, a good school is an honor to the factory!"
37 "I must confess sincerely that your school is indeed extraordinary," said the inspector. "Don’t think this is incense-burning. At least, I have never in my whole life come across another like it. I sat in on your examination and was astonished the whole time... What marvelous children! They know so much and answer so readily, and besides, yours are somehow special – unafraid, sincere... It is plain that they love you too, Fyodor Lukich. You are a pedagogue to the marrow of your bones, you must have been born a teacher. Everything is in you: inborn calling, long experience, and love for the work... It is simply astonishing how much energy, how much mastery of the work you have despite your poor health... this, you understand, steadiness, assurance! Someone in the school council spoke the truth when he said you are a poet in your calling... A poet, precisely!"
38 And all the diners, unanimously, as one man, began to speak of Sysoev’s extraordinary talent. And it was as if a dam had burst: sincere, enthusiastic speeches poured forth, of a kind no man makes when held back by calculating and cautious sobriety. Sysoev’s own speech was forgotten, and his unbearable character, and the ill, unkind expression of his face. Everyone fell to talking, even the silent and timid, newly appointed teachers, poor downtrodden youths who addressed the inspector no otherwise than as "your high nobility." It was plain that in his own circle Sysoev was a remarkable figure.
39 Accustomed over fourteen years of service to success and praise, he listened indifferently to the enthusiastic hum of his admirers.
40 In his place it was Bruni who reveled in the praises. The German caught every word, beamed, clapped his hands, and blushed bashfully, as though the praises were addressed not to the teacher but to himself.
41 "Bravo! Bravo!" he cried. "Just so! You’ve guessed my very thought!.. Splendid!.."
42 He kept peering into the teacher’s eyes, as if wishing to share his bliss with him. In the end he could not restrain himself, jumped up, and, drowning out every other voice with his shrill little tenor, cried out:
43 "Gentlemen! Allow me to speak! Hush! To all that has been said I can only add one thing: the factory administration will not remain in Fyodor Lukich’s debt!.."
44 Everyone fell silent. Sysoev raised his eyes to the German’s pink face.
45 "We know how to value things," Bruni went on, assuming a serious expression and lowering his voice. "To everything that has been said I must add that... Fyodor Lukich’s family will be provided for, and that to this end a sum of money was placed in the bank a month ago."
46 Sysoev looked questioningly at the German, then at his colleagues, as though at a loss: why should his family be provided for, and not himself? And then, in every face, in every motionless gaze fixed upon him, he read not sympathy, not compassion – which he could not endure – but something else, something soft, tender, and at the same time supremely ominous, resembling a terrible truth, something that in an instant filled his whole body with cold and his soul with inexpressible despair. With a pale, twisted face he suddenly leapt up and clutched his head in his hands. For a quarter of a minute he stood so, gazing ahead in horror at one fixed point, as if he saw before him that approaching death of which Bruni had spoken, then sat down and burst into tears.
47 "Come now!.. What is it?.." he heard anxious voices saying. "Water! Drink some water!"
48 A little time passed and the teacher grew calm again, but the former animation did not return to the diners. The dinner ended in gloomy silence, and much earlier than in years past.
49 Arriving home, Sysoev first of all looked at himself in the mirror.
50 "Of course, it was foolish of me to burst into tears there!" he thought, looking at his eyes with their dark circles and his sunken cheeks. "Today my complexion is a good deal better than yesterday’s. I have anemia and
catarrh of the stomach, and my cough comes from the stomach too."
51 Having reassured himself on this point, he slowly undressed and for a long while brushed his black suit with the little whisk broom, then carefully folded it and locked it away in the chest of drawers.
52 Then he went up to the table, where a stack of pupils’ exercise books lay, and, choosing out Babkin’s copybook, sat down and sank into contemplation of the handsome childish handwriting...
53 And meanwhile, while he sat examining his pupils’ dictation, in the next room
the district doctor sat, saying in a whisper to his wife that a man who, by all appearances, had no more than a week left to live ought not to have been let go to a dinner.
