Headnote
A brisk, practical note to Dmitry Timofeyevich Savelyev, evidently a tradesman or agent Chekhov relied on to handle small errands of business and mourning alike – here the payment of clergy and the arrangement of a funeral, dispatched with fifteen roubles and a promise to settle the rest over dinner. The invitation that follows, with its salt beef and horseradish, is characteristic Chekhov: a solemn errand and a convivial supper handled in the same breath.

I’m sending you 15 roubles. Forgive me, I couldn’t manage more. Give it to the priests and deacons, and as for the undertaker, we’ll talk it over at dinner today. We’ll sort the matter out somehow.
Посылаю тебе 15 руб. Извини, что не мог больше достать. Отдай их иереям и дьяконам, насчет же гробовщика потолкуем сегодня за обедом. Как-нибудь устроим дело.
Be sure to come to dinner. Drag Makar along too. I’ll cook up some salt beef with horseradish for you both. The sooner you both come, the happier my family will be
