demand for cohabitation in the name of the law

cohabitation demand

also: совместное сожитие

Under Imperial Russian law a husband could petition to compel a runaway wife to return to 'cohabitation' (sovmestnoye sozhitiye), since spouses had no legal right to live apart without formal separation; such demand letters, often sent through the police, were a recognizable feature of the period's domestic law.
