"Jesuit" (as slur)

Jesuit (slur)

also: иезуит

In period Russian usage, calling someone a "Jesuit" invoked the Society of Jesus's reputation (real or stereotyped) for casuistry, cunning, and hypocritical scheming; Shilokhvostov flings the word at Father Onisim to cast the priest's supposed vendetta as underhanded plotting rather than legitimate moral objection.
